My grandfather, George Gillig, was also a cousin to Chester and Leo, but that's all I know about them.

He came from someplace in Germany around 1880 as a child. I think his father's name was Michael, but I'm not even sure of that.

George (my grandfather) owned a bar just past the city line on Walden Ave. in Cheektowaga.

I am aware that your GILLIG research is likely now complete, but I always wondered if my GILLIG ancestors who were beer brewers and hops dealers in New York City were related somehow to the whiskey and wine GILLIGS of Buffalo.

My great-great grandmother was Anna GILLIG (1842-1926) who married beer brewer Jacob RUPPERT Sr. (1842-1915). Her parents were Georg GILLIG (1809-1862)and Anna DORN (1815-1876). Georg and his brother Leonhard (1814-1848) emigrated from Germany (Markt Zeuln, Oberfranken, Bavaria) and began a hops dealership in lower Manhattan and later opened a brewery. His first brewery was located on Fifth Avenue and Fiftieth Street but soon built a plant on E. 30th Street and Lexington Avenue and later, E. 3rd Street between A & B Avenue, the Lower East Side's Kleindeutchland.

I have never come across Damien, Lorez and Franz GILLIG in my research, but was curious is my GILLIGS ever came up in your research.

Thanks!
Jacob
jacob@jacobruppert.com

I doubt there is any connection, at least directly, to my family. However, here is some information: we think my Gillig family started in Alsace and migrated to near Frankfort and then to Grimm in Russia and to America. My grandmother's family, Heide, went from Germany to Grimm. My father's godfather was King Ferdinand. As I sit in my office without records, I can't remember if it was King of Romania or Bulgaria. He, the king, died in the 20's or 30's. My father was born in America and how the king got in the mix I am not sure except that we are supposed to be somehow related. Whether on the Heide or Gillig side I do not know.
My grandfather was Christian Carl Gillig born July 7,1875, his father was Johann Gillig born 1829 in Bavaria Germany, his mother was Frederica (I don't have her last name) she was born June 1842 in Swatzburg Germany. Christian lived in Victoria Texas but I do not know whether he was born there or not. He married Emma Hagadorn and they had 5 sons and 3 daughters. I do know that his oldest son Leonard Carl was born in 1907 and they lived and farmed in Victoria county at that time. Christian died June 7 1969.

There appear to be two Gillig families in Wisconsin. One, mine, were near Omrow. The other family seemed to be about 40 miles away in Fon du Lac. I have some information on the other family gleaned from years of searching. I am at work right now so I don't know how much. If you want more information, contact me again and I can look up at home. You can find most of it online under the familytreemaker.com site. They allow posting of family history and I did that a few years ago. It isn't the most up to date version of everything but the ones you desire should be as up to date as I will ever get. Memory says that the family you want to know more about also had a Chicago connection but not sure without going back and checking that out. Seems like I talked to someone 5-10 years ago about that. Don't know about the spelling. Also don't know about Bavaria. I have been to that area. It is my idea, not totally substantiated, that my family came from the Alsace area, west of Bavaria. That is a border area so it could be France or Germany. Bavaria would be, likely, the German side. From there they went to Russia then to the USA. Some went to Wisconsin and some went to Chicago area. In Russia there were apparently two Gillig families in Grimm and neither knew the other. I trace Samuel Gillig to 1850's. He may have been the one that left the German/French area and went to Russia. Possible that others went to USA about same time. Add France to your searches and you will find information of Gilligs living in the area today.

Hello,

There are a number of variations on the "Gilig" name. I'm researching my wifes family name "Gillig" and have been in contact with others doing the same.

My one source tells me that "Gillig" is the Russian (Volga German ) spelling, "Gillich" and Gilich" are the German spellings and "Gilik" in the USA. I have also found my wife's grGrandfather listed as "Geleg" in the 1920 census in Colorado.

Gilligs from Germany were apparently among the first settlers in the area South of Saratov, Russia in the late 1700s. From here, at least 3 seperate Gillig lines came to the USA between 1875 and 1915.

In Russia, "Gillig"s come from Erlenbach and Grimm south of Saratov near the Volga. In the USA, Gillig history is in Kansas, Michigan and I believe Ohio.

Alan A. Sitek

I have just received the following information on what may be my gggggrandfather: Baptized 4 June 1723. Joannes Michaelis Gilig. Mathai Gilig Sartonis hu atis et Apolonia conjugum filius legitimus levante Thoma Muller reftano.

My gggggrandfather was born in Külsheim, Bavaria,Germany and migrated to the Banat country of Austria-Hungary (now in Romania). The above info came from sources in Külsheim.

First, I would appreciate if someone could translate this to English; secondly the 'Gilig' surname is different from the 'Gillich' surname I have from the village he settled in the Banat. Does anyone know, is there a relationship between these two surnames? Thanks.

Gilligs are not part of my family. After
holidays are over, I will be attempting to
help a man in Germany trace the Gilligs who
came to Buffalo, NY - Damian, Lorenz and
Franz.

I won't be doing in-depth research but because he helped me with my interests, I
will be looking at some census extracts and already have 1850 on Damian family.

If anyone can give me a little help, in return I can place your Gilligs in Germany and tell you when they left.

Hope to hear from a Gillig researcher. Please
respond to my e-mail address rather than through this message board.

Joan

PS....I live in a suburb of Buffalo, NY.

Great, now having found the cemetery, try contacting the office of the cemetery, if one still exists. Also, should find something at county seat of that county.

Also, what year is it?

If an older year, you can have the library provide you the census report for that year and county.

I think you can get thru 1920 on census but not sure. They are sealed for X years. Might be up to 1930 or 40 now.

That gives you lots of great information.

I can't remember how far we got in discussions. There was a Gillig Brewery someone up there. Check Internet searcing for Gillig Brewery and you should find it. Might provide further leads.

I just got 110 new Gilligs/and descendants all from Ohio. I will check that when I get home and see if NY comes in to it. Andrew Gillig born in Germany is oldest and about 1760 or so.
Also, should find something at county seat of that county.

Also, what year is it?

I think I understand the beginnings now.

Gillig is German and I think I generally know the area.

Don't know how all got to where they are today.

Ohio branch.
Colorado
Kansas,
Illinois
Wisconsin
California
NY

A smattering in other areas but think all related.
There are TWO Wisconsin and Two Illinois branches

I know we can connect the dots.

Back to the other issue.

That Gillig in Ohio is from Mary Ann Payne, you will find her in this series of messages.

She really has done a fantastic job.

SORRY ABOUT CONFUSING MESSAGE. IT SEEMS THE SYSTEM ATE PARTS OF A MESSAGE SO I AM ATTEMPTING TO GET IT GOING AGAIN BUT STUFF SEEMS OUT OF ORDER AND DUPLICATED.

I am interested in finding someone who know of the family of Elizabeth Schulits, b. abt 1878 d. 1941. She married Frank Gillig and is buried in St. Mary's Cemetery in Pittsburgh. She is the sister of my g. grandfather and I am hoping that someone in her family might be researching our mutual family. Thanks.
