I have been doing some research on a Gilks family but they seem to be somewhat removed from the regions being researched by other people. I have got back to a Samuel Gilks who married a Sarah Graves at Feltham, Middlesex in 1824. I have not been able to identify the year or place of birth.

My husband's great-great-grandparents were Thomas Gilkes (b. 1831) and Sarah Newton (b. 1854), in Ratby, Warks. Could this be Ratley instead?

I picked up on a very old post on Ancestry. I'm not sure if you are still researching the Gilks family line but I have the following information:

I am researching my mother's maternal side of the family (Davis). I have found that George William Hewitt Gilks (baptised 28 March 1831 in Coventry, Warwickshire) married Emily Payne (my mothers great grandmother) 6 Sept 1858 in Coventry. George was killed in a train crash in Shardlow, Derbyshire 10 Oct 1869 (I have all the newspaper transcripts of the crash).

He had 2 children: Georgetta Matilda Gilks (1859-1914) (I have a very full account of her life and it is this that I am most interested in)and Clara Ann Gilks (1864-1890)

His parents were John Gilks (c.1801-1871) & Mary Burton (c.1801-1841)

He had the following siblings: Francis (Hewitt) Gilks (1825-1871), Elizabeth Gilks (1829), Joseph Gilks (1833), John Gilks (1838).

One of the children of Francis Hewitt gilks (Joseph) was a convict (I have a photo of him from his prison record). I also have another prison photo of a Francis Gilks (born c. 1860. Not sure of the connection yet.

I am seeking information re: Gilkes in Barbados. I am specifically linked to Thomas George Gilkes b. 1861 in the West Indies. His father and mother were both born in the West Indies (British). I do not have their names. Thomas immigrated from Barbados to New Jersey then to St. Petersburg, Florida. His daughter is my great grandmother, Eva Gilkes born 1899 in NJ, died in St. Pete.

So good to hear from you. I am in Pasco County. My grandmother, Eva's daughter Mary Darby Griffin, has passed away. Unfortunately, she did not pass on any information re: her great grandparents. Are you close to any of the other Gilkes in St. Pete. I can't believe we are stuck at William and Eva's parents!

I am researching a Joseph Gilkes too, however he was born in Shoreditch, London in 1806 (son, we think, of Joseph and Mary Gilkes (née Porter?)). Whilst I'm certain he must link into the Oxon/Northants family somewhere, I've not yet been able to find where. He married Ann Sophia Huns at St George in the East in 1830 and had 9 children. I know what you mean, my Knibb connection is like that. She was jane Knibb married Edward Southam 1705 Burton Dassett. But i am now thinking either she was from Oxfordshire or had been married befroe thus not a Knibb at all. There were many Knibb's in Harbury at the time but non called Jane or who wed a Jane although I found a Jane Knibb born in Banbury so wonder if they came from the same Harbury lot but had moved away and then she at least came back but that is a lot of work and the Southam line already has it's own head aches. I have two people claim Edward was from one place and others saying will proves his dad was someone elst compleatly. I have full details of the will but knowone who claims to have actually seen it. I emailed Lichfield as that is where it is likely to be but they haven't replied. Makes you want to scream!!!!

My paternal grandfather was Arthur Seth Laurant Gilkes from Barbados (born 1905) and his parents were Edward Stanley Gilkes, a tailor and Christiana Gilkes (nee Smith). I know no more thsan that I'm afraid but if you haver any further info on any of them I'd be very glad to have it.

Since my posts asking about Edward Stanley Gilkes, a tailor and his wife Christiana (nee Smith) I have discovered that they had a daughter, Millicent St John Gilkes baptised(so presumably born around)29 Sep 1886. Does anyone know anything about her? Edward and Christiana must have been born in the 1860s I'm guessing. They had a son (my grandfather) in 1905, Lamont Gilkes (baptised Arthur Seth Laurant).
Hope someone knows something!

His father was Edward Stanley Gilkes, a tailor. Do you recall what the memorial bench to the Gilkes family had on it? As yet I have had no luck finding out any thing about this side of my family other than what I have told you and the fact that Edward married a Christiana Smith. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I too am researching Gilkes in Barbados. My great grandfather was Edward Stanley Gilkes, a tailor. I imagine that he was born in the 1870s or 1880s. He married Christiana Smith but I don't know where or when because I can find no record. Does any of this strike a chord with you? maybe there is a link somewhere!

I live in England, but remember when visiting a public garden in Barbados, there was a memorial bench in the name of Gilkes. I mentioned it to someone, and they told me that there had been a lot of Gilkes's in Barbados. I have posted messages on the Barbados site in the past, but not received any response.
I have not been able to trace any of my Gilkes family to Barbados - but maybe not gone far enough back.

I am searching for siblings and their families of Edith May Gilkes b. May 2, 1895 in Birmingham. Her parents were from Adderbury, Oxfordshire. Edith had 2 younger brothers that I know of, Charles H. (1897) and William Clarence (1899) All years except Edith are approximate. She came to Canada on a ship of Home Children in 1911 at age 16. She married Charles Williams in April 1912. Dear David, this reply is not about this thread .... do you have any information about the Jeremiah Gilkes (?b.1769)who married Jane Baker in Quainton and went on to have Thomas Baker Gilkes (bpt1810)& Jeremiah Allnutt Gilkes (1806)? It has not been possible to get any further back than him although I am working on a theory that they may be linked to Thomas Gilks who married Ann Allnutt 1759 in Sutton Courtenay.

FRAZEYSBURG: John J. Gilkes, Jr., 52, of Worthington, Ohio died Monday morning, July 25, 2011 at The Inn At Sharonbrook in Newark, Ohio. (Licking County)

Born June 17, 1959 in East Liverpool, Ohio (Columbiana County) he was the son of the late John J. Gilkes, Sr. and Shirley (Moran) Gilkes and was a graduate of Beaver Local High School.
Mr. Gilkes was a member of the Order of Moose and attended the Perry Chapel Baptist Church. He was employed as a powdercoat painter with the Liebert Corporation of Worthington, Ohio.

Surviving is one sister, Janie (Robert) Clifford of Frazeysburg, Ohio; four nieces, Jamie Luckeydoo, Lacey Clifford, Courtney Clifford and Hayley Clifford and a great niece and great nephew, Addelynn and Brett Clifford.

My grandfather William Gilkes is Eva's brother. I live in the St. Petersburg area. I also am stuck, I have Thomas G. Gilkes as my greatgrandfather, but I do not know who his parents are. I found that he was born in Barbados and married Nellie ( Petronella ) Brown in 1882 in Passaic NJ. Nellie Brown was born in Holland.

Will you add a post if you find any more info. I will do the same.

I tried your e-mail but it doesn't seem to be active. My grandfather William J Gilkes was your father's older brother. William Gilkes was born in 1889 in Passaic NJ. Not sure when he moved to Fl. William and Peter's father is Thomas G Gilkes, born in Barbados abt 1860-1864. Their mother is Nellie Brown from Holland. I don't have any info on your father. I believe Thomas G Gilkes' mother is Catherine Elizabeth Gilkes ( don't have a father's name )and Thomas G Gilkes has a brother Joseph Bruce Gilkes born abt 1851 in Barbados. Thomas, Joseph and their mother came to NJ from Barbados abt 1800. This information is from familysearch.org and ancestry. Your father also had brothers Thomas and Edward. Also, sisters Nellie and Eva.
