Orrie L. Gilbert Jr.
TECUMSEH — Orrie L. Gilbert Jr., 89, of Tecumseh died Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2007, at Herrick Medical Center.
He was born May 12, 1918, in Big Rapids, Mich., to Orrie L. and Rosa (Norris) Gilbert. He married Florence L. Petersen on Nov. 17, 1945, in Ludington.
In his early years, he worked on the family fox farm in Big Rapids. Orrie graduated from Big Rapids high school and served in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1945. He received his undergraduate degree from Ferris State College and MBA from Northwestern University.
Orrie was a resident of Tecumseh since 1955 where he served as the administrator of Herrick Hospital until 1968. He also held positions at Hillsdale Medical Care Facility and in New Carlisle, Ind. Orrie was a member of the Rotary Club in Tecumseh and was on the Board of Directors for the Lenawee Medical Care Facility and served as superintendent of Skyrise Center in Adrian prior to his retirement.
He enjoyed gardening and loved and enjoyed his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Orrie was a long-time active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Tecumseh and was an Elder of the Church.
In addition to his wife, Florence, he is survived by his two daughters, Linda (Barry) Seidel of Tecumseh and Marcia (Jerry) Purdy of Portage; grandchildren, David Seidel of Detroit, Adrienne (Craig) Wood of Kalamazoo and John Purdyof Portage; two great-grandchildren, Sylvia and Nia Purdy-Wood. He is also survived by one sister, Marjorie Ariss of Grand Rapids. Orrie was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and five brothers.
A celebration of Orrie’s life will take place at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 2, 2007, at the First Presbyterian Church in Tecumseh with Pastor Richard Mortimer officiating. Cremation will follow. Visitation will be held Saturday from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Tecumseh Chapel of Handler Funeral Homes, and again on Sunday from 1 p.m. until the time of the service at the Church.
