GILBANK-EAST YORKSHIRE AND POSSIBLY CANADA?

My gggrandmother was Martha Gilbank and she was the illegitimate daughter of Ann Gilbank. When Martha married my gggrandfather, John Whitaker, in 1837 she was just 20. She died 5 years later, having had 3 children, the youngest being my ggrandfather, William Whitaker. John and Martha lived in Newton-on-Derwent. Their marriage was witnessed by Robert Gilbank, then 34 - possibly a cousin of Martha. I found Robert farming in Wilberfoss (he was born there) in 1861 and then I think he may have emigrated to Canada (Ontario) as I can't find him in England in 1871 but a Robert Gilbank, a Wesleyan Methodist, a farmer from Yorkshire was in Manvers, farming, in 1871. Can anyone tell me more about this Robert Gilbank in Canada? Particularly where he was born - and whether anyone out there recognizes any of this. Please get in touch if you do!

Robert Gilbank of Manvers Twp. was born in Yorkshire about April 1816. He was a son of Richard Gilbank and Christiana(?) Franks. Richard and Christiana had (among others) an older son William Gilbank who was my great-great-great grandfather. William was born Dec. 1813 in Appleton-le-Moor, Pickering, Yorkshire. Richard and Christiana also had a son Richard and daughter Mary.

Hi Mike

Robert died June 9, 1901 in Manvers Twp. and is buried in McCrea Methodist Cemetery, Manvers Twp., Victoria, Ontario. He and Ann had another daughter, Christiana who married George Gibson. Robert later married Sarah and had at least 3 more children.
Emeline married John Rainey
George Wesley married Eliza Jane Rainey
Kezia Jane married Richard Kirk

Since GILBANK is a pretty unique surname, I tend to collect anything I find.

Hope this helps!

Hello!
Since posting this message (which I'd forgotten about) I discovered that my Robert Gilbank died fairly young in Newton on Derwent, Yorkshire, England. Thank you for responding!
I'm still trying to establish a connection between Robert and Martha Gilbank both b. Newton on Derwent. I believe them to be cousins. Ann Gilbank had an illegigimate daughter to a William Brown (there is a bastardy recognizance online): when she married Robert was a witness. Robert was the son of William Gilbank, but I have yet to get proof that Ann was his sister.

Sadly I now know that my Robert Gilbank died fairly young and childless in Newton-on-Derwent, East Riding of Yorkshire. I have the death certificate. Many thanks to everyone who took the time to reply.
The search for a connection between Robert's father, William Gilbank, and Ann Gilbank, both from the tiny village of Newton on Derwent, continues.
