I think I'm the first to post...
According to family lore,my great grandmother, MARGARET GILBANE,came to this country from Co. Clare. She settled in Bridgeport, CT, and supposedly lived with a brother. We believe her parents names are Thomas GILBANE and Mary CLANCY.
So far I've found her and her husband Patrick NEARY on the 1910 and 1920 censuses, and both say she emmigrated in 1894.I haven't found much else.
So, are there any other GILBANES out there? Especially any in Bridgeport or Connecticut?

I now believe that Margaret GILBANE came from Carrick-On-Shannon, Co. Leitrim...but I'm still the only poster here!

Hi,

I have been doing research on my grandmother Jane Gilbane. She was born in 1893 on Carrick-On-Shannon, Aughrinim, Leitrim. Her parents where James Gilbane and Mary Anne Gill. I found out that her fathers parents where John Gilbane and Bridget Maglyn. But I can't find out who John Gilbane parents are. So maybe your Margaret Gilbane is a relative of my grandmother. I don't know if this has help. Hopefully we can find out more information. Happy researching.

Veronica-
My MARGARET GILBANE's parents are THOMAS GILBANE and MARY CLANCY, so my Margaret and your Jane aren't sisters. Perhaps James and Thomas were brothers, but I'm afraid my research doesn't go back that far...yet. -Colleen

I have some other Gilbane's to add to yours. I think we may all be distant cousins. My paternal grandfather was John (Jack) Gilbane. He was a cousin of William and Thomas F. Gilbane, who are the founders of Gilbane Building Company of Providence, RI. They all came from the Carrick-on-Shannon area of County Leitrim, Ireland. I don't have much information about my grandfather, but I know that he was living in RI in the 1890's. There are still Gilbane's in Lietrim (I've found the names of some on sports pages of newspapers from that area). I also found an Edward Gilbane mentioned on a web page for Leitrim-Rosscomman. It's not a real common name

Saw your posts on the Gilbanes....

There is a large group of Gilbanes in RI that came to the US around the 1850s from Leitrim . I have some history- but not with me at the moment.

Seems there was also a branch of the family that went from Ireland to England. I have e-mailed with several of these Gilbanes.

Margaret, my mother is a Gilbane, from Providence RI. I have history of that line if you want it. The other respondent (Mike) is a second cousin. My Grandfather was William Gilbane of the building Co.

David,

I'd love to get the information that you have on the Gilbanes. What was your Grandmother's maiden name. My paternal Grandmother (also Margaret) was a Collins from County Galway, where some Collins cousins are still living. Hope to hear from you soon.

Eileen,
I have a book published by Gilbane Building Co. The book gives a history of the family in Providence. Unfortunately it is packed away right now, but I will dig it out this weekend. My grandfather was William Gilbane and my grandmother's maiden name was Midgley (I believe English). My grandfather was the third generation in this country. I believe his ancestors were from County Leitrim. I believe the first to come over were William and Bridget.
I will get you more info when I have it.

David

Hi Roni. Also, Grandma (Jane Gilbane) had a sister she used to visit in Connecticut named Maggie. She had another sister named Katie, but I can't remember where she lived. Grandma Jane was one of 22 siblings. She did have two brothers (unsure if they were twins) who drowned when one fell into a body of water, and the other one dived in to save his brother. She immigrated here through Ellis Island, I think. But I do not know of records of that.
