Joseph & Theodor Gilb

I am looking for information on Theodor and Joseph Gilb. Joseph Gilb is my gggrandfather. I am trying to link him to Theodor Gilb.

From recent research I've found my Joseph Gilb with Theodore on census and church records, so I'm fairly sure they are related. I just haven't been able to figure out how. Theodore is about 10 years older than Joseph, so he could possibly be an older brother.

According to the 1850 Federal Census, Theodore, his wife Augusta, and Joseph are living in the same dwelling next to a dwelling occupied by Simon and Catharine Gilb and their children. I don't know how Simon is related to Theodore and Joseph. In 1850, Simon was 43, Theodore was 23, and Joseph was 13. An interesting note is that according to the census, Joseph was born in KY. Ancestry.com transcribed Theodore's birthplace as IA, but I think it was probably an abbreviation, maybe for Germany, but most likely not Iowa. Nobody in my parents generation ever remembers hearing of an ancestor being born in Kentucky or Iowa...

In the marriage record from St Peter's Evangelical Church for Joseph Gilb and Margaretha Schmidt, Theodore is listed as the witness, but I'm not so good with translating German, so he could have been something other than witness.

Joseph is listed as the "witness" in the next record of the marriage of Nicolaus Gilb and Caroline Privote (I'm sure that's not quite how you spell her name, but the old microfilm is hard to read).

I find baptismal records for both Theodore's and Joseph's children at St Peter's German Evangelical Church.

Thanks for any help. I'm happy to share my research.

Joseph Gilb was the son of Simon Gilb and his first wife Maria
Eva Daum, who married in Herxheim Landau, Bavaria. The parents
emigrated in 1836 and lived across the river in Kentucky.
After Maria died, Simon married Catharina Gilb in 1846 at St.
Mary's in Cincinatti. Catharina was a sister of Theodore
Gilb, who lived nextdoor in 1850 and had recently married in June 1850. Theodore was therefore an uncle of Joseph Gilb.
Joseph had full brothers Nicholas, Frederick, and Valentine.
Hope this helps.

Simon Gilb and wife Maria and son Nickolaus emigrated from
Herxheim in 1836, leaving from Havre, France on the ship
Harriet Rockwell, arriving in New York on 21 Jun 1836. They
settled in Kentucky where Maria had three more sons, Frederick, Joseph and Valentine before she died bef 1846 when Simon remarried to Catharina Gilb 11 Nov 1846 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Cincinnati. Catharina and her brother Theodore Gilb had just arrived from Herxheim on 1 Aug 1846, so her marriage to Simon may have been an arranged one. By the time that Theodore and Catharina's widowed mother came over in 1855 with another brother Mathias and his family, this group of Gilb's left the Catholic Church
because they felt the church had swindled their widowed mother out of their fathers property, and they joined the German Evangelical Church. I have only traced Simon's line
back two generations and there are no common ancestors to the line of Catharina Gilb whose line goes back to the 1600's, but most likely there is some connection back there.
