I'm looking for any information re: Joseph GILB (b. Abt. 1839 d. 1881) of Cincinnati, OH.

Joseph married Margaretha Schmidt in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio, in 1860.

Thanks in advance,

Pam

I am also researching GILBs in the Cincinnati OH/Northern KY area. I collect everything I find on GILBs in that area. I looked at my index of documents and found I have a Joseph GILB in several census from 1850-1870 and in city directories. I can make copies of the information if you would like them. My GILB is Francis/Frank GILB. I first find him in the 1860 census in Mason Co. KY. He served for four years in the Union army. I am looking for relatives that might have a picture of him.

I'm pretty sure my Joseph Gilb spent some time in Mason Co. I find him in the 1850 census along with a few other Gilbs. I believe all the Gilbs in this census are related. The census lists my Joseph as being born in KY, but I'm pretty sure he was born in Herxheim, Germany. Theodour would have been his cousin or uncle, I'm not sure. There are a few Simons in the family also. Joseph's parents were Ferdinand Gilb and Apollonia Bregaldin. I believe he had 7 or 8 brothers and sisters. The names Frank Joseph are very prevelent in my family. My GGF Frank Joseph Gilb, His Sons were Frank Joseph Gilb and Joseph William Gilb (my gfather) Joseph William Gilb had a son Joseph Frank Gilb (my dad). My Gilbs settled in Cincinnati. I don't know what they were doing in KY. I find them in census records and early church records, but I cant find any emigration records for them. Maybe we could help each other out.

Hope to hear from you soon.

Gilbs in Cincinnatti Area

The Gilb's tended to cross back and forth between Cincinnatti and Northern KY. This is my husbands line. It would appear based on the LDS family history library that most of the Gilb's were born in Herxheim. When I went through the city directories I was really surprised to see so many of the Gilb's involved in the furniture making business. But in 1989 my husband and I visited Herxheim and then it all made sense. It is a large furniture making area. This tiny town had no restaurant but had a furniture store on almost every street corner. The first one going into town coming from the south had a store named Mobile Gilb. With accents over the o.

I think the reason some I can't find immigration information is that Frank Gilb served in the military and had a right to citizenship based on the service and did not have to go through the regular process.

My e-mail address is saragilb@pacbell.net If you send me your e-mail address I'll send you a copy of the index to all of my documents and make copies of those you don't have.

Pam my hard drive crashed and I lost all my e-mail addresses. I've been in contact with other Gilb's. There is a GILB forum on the geneaology.com message board that my husband's second cousin started.

I went to Washington DC for a statistical conference and was able to go to the archives in the evenings. I looked at Frank Gilb's pension file and found documents that had not been copied even though I asked for copies of all of the papers. Two witnesses may give me some more information to find the place of emigration. One said he had gone to school with Frank here in the US and the other said they lived in the same town in Germany and had immigrated within a year of each other. These two witnesses were from Mason County, KY. I found one in the census and found his year of immigration as 1851. I haven't had time to follow-up on any of this as my son just got married and I've been busy with all of that. Hope to hear from you again.

I am researching the Gilb family of Mason Co, Ky. My Gt. Gt. grandfather Nicholas Gilp, was born in 1824-1826, in Germany and married Anna Mary Keller, and raised 10 children in Maysville. They are buried in St. Patricks Cem, Washington, Ky. Nicholas's father was Fred Gilp and his mother was Ami Rahler. Does anyone have connections to this family?

We, too, are researching Francis George Gilb, b. 23 Sept 1833 in Germany, d. 13 May 1895 in Ludlow, KY. He was married 3 June 1866 to Susan Melissa Linville in Cincinnati, OH.

Susan Melissa Lindville was b. abt 1848 (BIRTH: Date is from letter from Virginia Gilb Dipple, great granddaughter in possession of Fred Cochrane; Isabelle (Smith) Anderson's records say that the parents of Susan Melissa Linville were living in Kentucky but they were evacuated to Ohio because of floods and that’s why she was born in Ohio.)in Cincinnati, OH and died 4 May 1883 (DEATH: Record of Military Declaration for Widow's Pension submitted by her husband's second wife lists Susan's Death Date; in possession of Fred Cochrane)
in Belleview, KY.

My Cousin, Virginia Dipple said: “I know that some of Grandpa's cousins, the Linville's came west...I just know that I knew Charles and Nellie Linville...and I still have and use a bowl that they gave me as a wedding present, 40 years ago.”

Francis was married a second time to Mary (last name unknown) 27 June 1890.

I am the son of Alice Melista Gilb and George Cochrane; Alice is the only daughter of Frank Peter Gilb and Martha Langton Smith, Frank Peter is the son of Francis George Gilb and Susan Melissa Linville.

We want very much to find out who the parents were of Francis George Gilb and Susan Melissa Linville and any other information available. Needless to say we are very interested in going up the tree as far as we can. Any help or information would be gratefully welcome!

We have quite a bit of information including pictures of various family members (although not of Francis or Susan Melissa, unfortunately). I will post the pictures I do have on a web site and send the web address as soon as it is done, so if anyone wants to make copies they will be available. I would be happy to share any other documentation I have with anyone doing research on my family.

I can be reached on fcochrane@home.com

My Grndfather ,Henry Gilb once said his father met his wife on a ship while emigrating to this country that would be sometime before 1850. There were a number of Gilbs in the NKY area in the 1896 city directory. Considering the large families of the time . There may be some connection.
