Albert William GIGG was born between Jan-Mar 1888 in Kensington London. In the 1901 census aged 13, he was living with his aunt and uncle at 35 Saddlers Row Petworth.
1911 Census he is aged 23 working as an carpenter/upholsterer and staying with John (50) & Georgina Yate (47) who was his aunt and she was born in Sidmouth Devon. John and Georgina have been married for 25 years.
He married Lily Augusta Grimwood on 13th April 1914 at Independent Chapel in Hounslow, London. Lily was born in January 1890 in Stepney London and they had two children Charles Edward Gigg born on 24th January 1915 and Albert John born on 13th October 1916 in Petworth.
He enlisted into the army and his address was Pound Street Petworth.
Albert joined the Army on 20 November 1915 and was called up on 30th May 1916. His army number was 176767 and he joined 219th Field Company Royal Engineers in 31st March 1917. 219th Company supported 32nd Division in the area of Coxyde. It was likely that after being wounded he was treated at 91st Field Ambulance Station. He died from his wounds on 21st July 1917 and is buried at Coxyde Cemetery in Belgium. Lily was paid a widows pension of 22 shillings and 11 pence a week and had by 1917 moved to East Street Petworth, Sussex
Lily remarried in September 1923 in Midhurst Sussex and became Lily Walker, she died in June 1941 at Petersfield in Hampshire
