Pickle Gifford of NJ to Stout's, Adams Co., OH - sons' lines
I am interested in the lines of descent of James, son of Pickle, who married Sarah Rogers in Adams Co., OH. Also Isaac and Lemon, two other sons, who married two Montgomery sisters. I understood the father, Pickle, was a R/War soldier from NJ.

Pickle was b. N.J. 1771/2 His wife Catherine b. N.J.1772. Came to Pa. where some ch. were b. 1791-1795. Married prob. Pa. or Va.Not in Pa. Census for 1790 or 1800. Found a Peregrine P. Gifford in 1800 Lewis Co. Ky. and Pickle there 1810. Pickle's son Isaac b. 1799 Pa. named his first son Perry and this name carried down in descendants of Pickle. Wondering if Peregrine P. and Pickle were one and the same person or closely related. 1804 tax list for Mohaning Co. and Trumball Co. Ohio show a James & Richard Gifford as well as Peregrine in the area. James, son of Pickle[m. Sarah Rogers] had son James[m.Melissa? Newman] who removed to Ks. and d. in Mo. All of Pickles ch. died before he did [1851/2] except James Sr.[d. 1875] There was a Timothy Gifford in Adams Co. Oh. for a short time. Pickle is not in my own Gifford line. I'm trying to help someone who was VERY helpful to me when I first got into genealogy. Pickle is her brick wall. She needs his N.J. birthplace, his parents, siblings, etc.

Re: Pickle Gifford of NJ to Stout's, Adams Co., OH - sons' lines
Thank you. I have come across a number of R/War vets and descendants around Stout's Run, OH in early 1800s, including Wm. Rogers, Sr. Some of these people came from Monmouth, NJ. There was a large Monmouth Patent which became a county, then was broken down into smaller counties - Pickle may be from that area. I believe I did come across a reference to a Peregrine at some point. I think his son "Lemon" Gifford is also mentioned somewhere as a "Leman" - these may be some variation on French Hugenot names. Also many Brits from New England supposedly bought into the Monmouth Patent in NJ.

Re: Pickle Gifford of NJ to Stout's, Adams Co., OH - sons' lines
This is very useful to me as Sarah's sister, Nancy, was my gg grandmother. She married Wm. M. Rogers, Wm. Rogers' son, Sarah's brother. There was a strain of red hair in the family which has been narrowed down to the Rogers-Montgomery line. I suspected it came from Margaret or Samuel, so this is good to know.
Regarding Margaret being from Ireland and that they were married there. Nancy and two of her living siblings indicated in the 1880 census (the first time such a question was asked on a census about birth places of parents) that Margaret was born in PA. I have wondered about this as well because someone put out they were married about 1791, a child was born in 1794 - either at sea or in Washington Co., PA, and that the second child was born in 1799 in England. Also the date given for the second daughter's last child would have her having the child about 46-47 years of age. It seems that Sarah and Elenor's dates should be reversed. After 1799 all the children are born in the usual two year increments and seem to be born in OH.
I have tried to locate Samuel in Washington County, PA earlier than most persons are saying he was there. I did find a Samuel Montgomery with a young adult female (probably wife) in the 1790 U.S. Washington Co., PA census. That is all.
I am also trying to find out if Samuel might have had anything to do with the Whiskey Rebellion of 1794 which took place in that area, involving many Scots-Irish farmers who were distilling their grain in large volume rather than selling it and Alex. Hamilton attempted to tax them on it against which they rebelled. I have found several Stout, OH. farmers' surnames among these Western PA farmers who took part. Shortly afterward, they seem to leave the area. Some to KY then across the OH to Stout's. I had long wondered why Samuel, if he was fresh from Ireland, would have risked his family in this land where Shawnee fighting was barely over (same with Stout, whose children were kidnapped at one point). By 1804 there were 4 distilleries in Stout, OH. Perhaps it had to do with the freedom to operate their distilleries. Thank you again.

Re: Pickle Gifford of NJ to Stout's, Adams Co., OH - sons' lines
I have some information about Pickle Gifford's descendants through his son Isaac and Grandson James. In Lucinda Gifford Bivans(daughter of James)application to the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Nation, she list her Great Grandfathers name as James. I have no other documentation to confirm that he is James and not Pickle or is James Pickle. She claimed her Indian blood through her father (James) and grandfather (Isaac). She also said that her Great Grandfather lived with the Cherokee in Virginia, the eastern part. Lucinda lived on the Cherokee Indian Reservation in Howe Oklahoma but was turned down for enrollment around 1908 because she did not know her Father or Grandfathers Indian names. In letters written by the Indian Agent for Lucinda to Washington DC she claimed James (Pickle) was 1/2 Cherokee and on the Cherokee Rolls. The Indian Agent wrote that he thought she looked like a 1/2 blood and some of her kids looked like they could be 1/2 blood Cherokee. I have come to a stand still looking for the parents of Pickle(James). Any help would be appreciated. I have more information on Giffords feel free to email me. Happy to share any info I have.
