I'm trying to connect my John Gifford to your Humphrey. An old Bible says when John, dob 7-6-1809, was a young boy he moved from Vermont to Canada. A cousin of mine has John's father as Umphrey Jeffrey Humphrey Gifford.

John Gifford b ca 1809

In June of 1829 Durham County Ontario Canada there was a John Gifford, age 20 years at that time. I know he was not the son of Ephraim Gifford, (who did have a son called John, but that one was only eleven years old in June of 1829) and I have no real idea who his father was - although my money at the moment is on Humphrey Gifford Jr's brother Joshua as being the father of the 1829 John Gifford. Humphrey Gifford Jr is not known to have returned to the USA at any time after arriving in Upper Canada in 1796/97. However, they were it seems a very mobile family and travelled back and forth a good deal between Vermont and Ontario during the 1797 to 1830 era. Would like to hear more from you concerning this family, feel free to contact me directly at bboru@sympatico.ca

I recently was e-mailed information that confirms your thoughts that my John Gifford (1809) was the son of Joshua. Apparently he had a brother Horace. Do you have a wife for Joshua? Joshua resided in Erie, Pa before his death and some of John's children were born in Erie.

If you haven't already figured it out by now, Joshua and Pauline (Herrington) Gifford were the parents of Horace, born 30 June 1817 in Port Hope, Ontario. Horace went to Jackson County, Michigan, and there is a biography of him in the 1881 Jackson County history (available online through the Library of Michigan website). I'm only distantly related to these Giffords. I'm also a Herrington descendant, but can only guess at Paulina's ancestors. No doubt it's the Baptist family from Exeter, RI, which came to southern Vermont.

Hi,

I just got a copy of my g-g-g-g-grandmother's death certificate. Her married name was Freelove Metott, born in Canada about 1805. The certificate lists her father as Samuel Gifford, her mother as Mary. Freelove and her husband Peter Metott came to the U.S. between 1830-1840 and settled in Florence, Oneida Co., New York. I'm just beginning to research but it looks like the Samuel in your tree is a possibility.

Thanks,
Roxane

Paul, I never saw this reply until today. I am blown away. I have been looking for Pauline Herrington for forever. she is buried here in akron where John Gifford is so I assumed it was his mother but could never figure out who her husband was. Which Joseph are we talking about? There are so many. I have never found a Joseph with a wife of Pauline.

yes, it is a huge family. and family reunions have always been wonderful. I am delighted to be a part of this family. hearing stories and finding a thousand things about your own ancestors is really interesting. the wisdom that my grandfather has about his childhood and the family and the stories is overwhelmingly comforting to know that we're here. we've survived. and we've made an impact. we've left our footprint on the earth. I wouldn't want to be a part of any other family.
