that's interesting. My grandfather, Fred Charles Giebel, was born in June 1896 in the Bronx. His father was a Fredrick Charles Giebel, born in September 1862. His father (unknown)emigrated from Bremen Germany. My grandfather visited his relative, the Von Nuys in the Bremen area of Germany when he was stationed in WW 1. My grandfather was an only child. My family is from LI as well.
do you think there's any connection?

I will ask my father about this and get back to you. I do remember that he believed that the family had emigrated from Bremen. My Grandfather Joseph A. did have siblings though.

My great-grandfather was Charlie Giebel married to Mary Darria. My grandmother was Katherine (1896) born in NYC. They were originally Jewish converted to Catholicism either in the USA or when still in Germany. Possibly two sons named Adam and Henry. When Katherine married my grandfather John James Hickey (fireman in Navy) June 17, 1917, we believe she was disowned. However she kept in touch with her family evidently because just before she passed on in 1947 her brothers came out to Ukiah, CA to take her back to NYC along with her sons.

That sounds great. Katharine Giebel is buried in Ukiah, CA. My family has been trying to find out more on her and her family and their origins. I found in a census report that her mother as actually born in Ireland and her father in maybe Prussia but that was ambiguous. Of her grandchildren on her son Jerry's side we are all over the US. I am the oldest of 5 and am 59 living in San Diego. Most of the other grands are about my age or older. My dad was the next youngest of 7 of which none of his siblings are alive.
