My ancestor, Henry Gicker, married Mary Magdalena Holl on 19 March 1783 in the Schwarzwald Church. The pastor noted that Henry was from Berns Twp., Berks Co. Henry and MM later moved to Hemlock Twp., Columbia Co. and I have a copy of his will. Can anyone tell me anything about Henry's parents?

I have just started researching my grandfather's family, the Gicker family. The earliest information I have is the following information from a family bible:

"Absalom Kissinger Gicker, son of Jonathan and Rebecca Gicker was born June 7, 1843.

Sarah Catharine, daughter of Franklin Gicker and Lydia Ann Werntz, was born July 18, 1848.

Children

Edward Absalom, son or Absalom Kissinger Gicker and S.G. Gicker was born February 16, 1873.

Franklin Scott, son of Absalom Kissinger Gicker and S.G Gicker was born March 3, 1875.

Lydia Irene, daughter of H.K. & L.C. Gicker was born July 30, 1876 in the year of Centennial"

I am sorry I have taken some time to reply to your posting, but I cannot give you a direct link to your Gickers: my guess might be that "your" Absalom might be a grandson of Absalom, son of "my" Henry.

This is what I have been able to piece together: two Gicker/Gucker/Giger brothers (Jacob and Henry) came from the Palatinate aboard the "Lydia" on 19 Sept 1743. It looks as if Henry settled in Berns Twp., Berks co. and Jacob in Tulpehocken. Henry and his wife (see below)had two daughters baptized at Bern Reformed Church, Bern Township, Berks County. The daughters are Maria Elisabetha bapt. 6 Aug. 1749 (sponsor Henry Sauder and Maria Elisabetha Freimeier) and Maria Caterina bapt. 8 Dec. 1751 (looks as if brother Jacob Gucker was sponsor).

It is believed that the Daniel who m. Catharine Weaver was also a son (1761-1844); as well as Henry Gucker,(1767-1835) p. 32 of Bern United Church of Christ, Berks Co. There may well have been other children.

Henry Gucker/Giger jr. (1767-1835) married Maria Magdalena Holl/Hill in the Schwarzwald church: "p. 25 "Henrich Gicker of Bern, Berks Co., married Magdalena Holl on March 19, 1793." He died intestate, but from the petition for an inquest it appears that he had the following children:
Elizabeth (1788-1866) m. John Kreitz/Crites;
Maria Catharina (1793-1794) twin;
Eva (1793-1889) twin; m. Philip Heimbach;
Absalom (1795-?) m. a Shamcastle and lived in Philadelphia (a silk merchant - does this sound familiar?!);
Henry (c. 1796-) m. Catharine Meyer;
Daniel (1797-1871) m. Catherine;
Susannah (1801-1881) m. Peter Heimbach (Philip's brother);
Mary (1805-1855) m. George Shane;
Jacob (1807-);
Joseph (c. 1814-1855);
Solomon (c. 1816-1867) m. Emeline Kuntz;
Elias (1818-1878) m. Margaretha Weaver.
(It is possible there were also a Sarah m. George Huyett and a second Maria Catherina, but they are not listed in the petition.)

Eva Gicker's christening record (bap. 17 Nov1793 @ Schwarzwald Ref Ch, Exeter Tp, Berks Co, PA;) is very interesting because it states that "the sponsors were the grandparents: Henry Geiger and Maria Margaretha". I believe this to be Maria Margaretha Freymeyer - herein another fascinating genealogy! - and the sponsor (mentioned for M.E.above),Maria Elizabeth Freimeier, was her sister.

If you (or anyone who reads this) has any further information, please share it with me/us! I am particularly interested in the gravestones at Eplers in Berns co. as I have read that they state the Guckers/Gickers were from Elsoff in Wittgenstein, but I have no way of verifying this. Beverley

Thank you for this information, Linda. Would you know if his tombstone is still extant and if there is any information on it? (I have a copy of his will, if you are interested.)

As of how I have not found his headstone, it may not even be there anymore. I do have his will, thanks. Just a heads up, a lot of his children are buried at Bern Church. If you send me your email I can try to send you copies of all the Gickers that I have at Bern. Where are you in the Gicker line?

I would love to hear from you, Linda, and my email is blstraub@shaw.ca.
My understanding is that Henry Gicker/Giger/Gucker was the first of the line in Berns Twp; that he was born about 1724 in Elsoff, Westphalia and died in Berns Twp. in 1809? (If you have HIS will, I would love to have a copy! also his burial record?) He married Maria Margaretha Freymeyer on 16 August 1747 at Berns Ref. Church (do you have a copy of record?!) (She has a fascinating line as well - are you aware of it?)

- I am descended from his son, Henry, born 1767 in Berns Twp. and died 5 January 1835 in Hemlock Twp., Columbia (now Montour) Co. (Would you have his baptismal record?) He married Mary Magdalena Holl on 19 March 1793 in the Schwarzwald Church, Berks Co. It is his will that I have a copy of and would be happy to send you.

- My last Giger/Gicker is Henry's daughter, Susannah, who married Peter Heimbach. She was bap. 24-May-1801 @ St. John's (Hain's) Ref Ch,, Lower Heidelberg Tp, Berks Co, PA (would you have a copy of this?); married Peter about 1818 (any hope of a record?!) and died 3 May 1881 in Eckford, Calhoun Co., Michigan.

- Looking forward to hearing from you. What is your line? Beverley
