JoAnne, Could the surname possibly have been Gracey? There was a Robert Gracey who served in the Revolutionary War from Iredell and Rowan Counties in North Carolina, which are not too far from Orange County, where the Forrester family lived.

Do you know where the the Gricie / Gicie spelling came from? I would like to find and view the original document, whether it's a Will or a tax list, or whatever the original source may have been.

I have never done any further searching into the Gicie name. What I had was received from another Forrester descendant. Because, at that time, so many could not read or write, names were often misspelled including the name Forrester. I wish I had further info for you. JoAnne

If you do her name on internet search, you will find it spelled 'Gicie' or 'Gricie', but did not see any mention of possible 'Gracey' spellings.

I saw this post and just had to reply...I am currently working on this line as my Dad is a direct male line descendant. I am trying to untangle the web prior to 1755 and it is a doozy. I have a lot of info on this family and the huge stumbling block has to be this name Gricie. There was a James Forrester married to an Elizabeth Gricie but that marriage takes place about 100 years after the James we are talking about is deceased. It is not a typo...that being said someone supplied me with a copy of a family Bible which was James Madison's Forrester(first son of Silas Forrester who was the son of Richard-brother was Hezekiah which is how I come down) and in a hand written addendum the reference to this James Jr's wife(father of Richard- Richard moves from SC to settle Sugar Creek, Hickman county Tenn ) is not Gricie or Gracie but Elizabeth Grant. This is extremely plausible only because the Forrester and Grants did do business and eventually lived across the way from the Forrester's on Mush Creek and the Forrester's were there to settle the Grant estate. Hmmm...This beckons a closer look. My goal is to find the guy who crossed the pond...and I am oh so very, very close.

The family bible is a great find, Congratulations!

The Gricie name with it's various spellings has been repeated so many times without a source citation, that apparently no one knows where it came from, and it's simply accepted as fact.

This is a classic example showing how much progress could be made if everyone who is researching their family would please just cite their sources.
