Hilton Hi

I coresponded with Crystal some 9 years ago, seeking a family conection. Unfortunately, we didn't connect the family names as her family name was originally 'Hichun'. There is a strong similarity but no link.

Our 'Gishen' name originates from the wife of Meir Leizerowitz ,Gisha. They changed the family name from Leizerowitz (son of Leizer)to 'Gishen zuns' (son of Gisha)becoming Gishen, to avoid call-up to the army/war of the 4 sons.

From Leizerowitz (which means 'son of Leizer/Lazar/Eliezer')to the current youngest generation we can count 8 generations. Both Meir and Lazar are names which are repeated in different generations.

Joe Gishen, now living in Cape Town, is the 'Gishen family historian' and best source of information.

I am still are looking for a Gishen who went to Galvestown in the southern Sates of USA, but am a lot less active today.

BTW the family immigrated from the Novgrudok and Minsk areas of what is today, Belarusia (towns including Luptch, Iyve, etc ). I need to update the tree after a very long absense - all the hatch, match and dispatch info.

Hope you are well and happy roots searching

The old age of this post may indicate you already have the information. But perhaps I can help. I have been researching the descendents of Chaim-Leib Gischen & his wife Malka. They actually immigrated to South Africa (adopting the spelling Gischen), not Australia. Only one of his sons, Benjamin, adopting the spelling Gishen, immigrated to Australia. I am related to one of his descendents through daughter Gitel, by marriage. I would interested in sharing information.

Hilton, this is an old post, but If you are still looking, I would be able to help. I do have the ship-manifest document for Meyer's immigration to South Africa (in the company of his mother Malka). I have been researching the descendents of Chaim-Leib Gischen. I am related by marriage. Regards, Donald (guyleslie@aol.com)
