Three years later on 30 October 1667 at Quebec City he (Gabriel Gibault) married Suzanne Durand. Suzanne, the daughter of Etienne and Genevieve de la Mar, was born in 1653 and baptized at St. Sauveur in the town of Montivillier near Rouen, France. She arrived in New France in 1667 and was one of about one hundred women sent by the king to marry soldiers and other men that year. These women known as “Les Filles du Roi” or “King’s Daughters” came between 1663 and 1673. About 700 women came and records indicate that most had dowries. It is not documented if Suzanne had a dowry.
Gabriel and Suzanne had nine children: Jean Baptiste, Marie Madeleine, Suzanne, Jeanne, Seraphin, Angelique, Pierre (twin), Gabriel (twin) and Etienne…

Her father was a soldier in the famous Carignan Regiment sent by the king to guard the safety of the French settlers against the English and the Iroquois. Her mother was a “King’s Daughter”. Jean Baptiste and Anne had 16 children: Marie Anne, Gabriel, Marie Madeleine, Louise Marguerite, Jean Baptiste, Jean Baptiste, Philibert, Pierre, Laurent, Jacques, Marie Anne, Etienne, Gilles, Marie Josephe, Marie Angelique, Augustin. Literal translation for “execute pour avoir cache sa grossesse et expose son enfant”—“executed for having hidden her pregnancy and risking the (life? reputation?) of her child.” I think this probably has to do with having a bastard child, out of wedlock, in violation of the societal and religious mores of the time and place.]

Lachine, Quebec, now part of the city of Montreal. In 1727, when Philibert Gibeau, Sr. and Francoise Lecuyer married there, it was probably an outlying part of the settlement at Montreal. Since Gabriel Gibault arrived in Quebec city in 1664 this Gibbo line has gradually moved westwards up the St. Lawrence river waterway towards Montreal.

Laprairie (La Prairie—literally “the Prairie”) across the river from Montreal and Lachine, Quebec.)
1794-1805: From the 1860 and 1870 United States Census of Malone, Franklin county, New York: “Reuben Jeebo is listed in the 1860 Census as age 59, hence born about 1801. In the 1870 Census he is age 76, hence born about 1794. He was born in Canada. The data for his wife Elizabeth is more consistent. In 1860 she is listed as 55, hence born about 1805. In the 1870 Census she is 65, hence born about 1805. She was also born in Canada.”
From an email dated April 25, 2007, from Betty Rabideau to Charles Frakes. Subject: More about Reuben, etc.:
“I would like to say that the given name "Reuben" can not be the true given name for your ancestor. Even though it has been written that way since the 1800's in the census reports and other documents, it is not a name used by French Canadians and I have not found it in any French Canadian records for Gibeau. So saying that, I suspect that the true given name is Philibert, or Albert, or Hubert. How it was changed to Reuben is a mystery. Remember that these were uneducated French speaking people who settled in English speaking areas.”
[Authors Note: 1. This Reuben Jeebo was born about 1801. If his name was indeed Albert or Philibert or Hubert, as Betty Rabideau suggests, then it is possible he could be the Hubert Gibeau who is the subject of the following 1796 record, or a brother of Hubert’s. 2. This might explain why an aging Reuben Jeebo (Gibbo) is in the household of his possible son or nephew Moses Gibbo in the 1870 Census in Malone, Franklin, New York. That Reuben’s wife’s name is listed in 1870 as Elizabeth, but she could easily be “Marie-Elizabeth.” Hubert Gibeau married a woman named Marie Desanges Houlle (see the 1796 record below.)]

Clinton, Franklin and Essex counties are in the northeastern corner of the state; bordering with Ontario, Quebec, and Vermont. 2. In 1836 when his family immigrated from La Prairie, Quebec to northern New York state, Moses Gibbo was about nine years old. 3. In 1837, when her family immigrated to northern New York state, Rosille Fountain/Foutaque was about seven years old.]
1836 county formation map of northeast part of New York state. The province of Quebec, Canada borders on the north, and the state of Vermont borders on the east. Clinton (Cl), Franklin (Fr) and Essex (Es) counties were established in this configuration by 1808.
1838-39: [Authors Note: Extrapolating from the data in the 1860 Census of Malone, Franklin Co., New York… The ages and birth locations of Reuben and Elizabeth Gibbo’s children suggest the family came to the US from Canada about 1838-39.]
1840 and 1850: [Authors Note: 1. Moses Gibbo was born in 1827, was 13 in 1840,and 23 in 1850. 2. His parents names may have been Hubert/Philibert and Marie, and they may have been listed in the 1860 and 1870 US Census data as Reuben and Elizabeth. Reuben and Elizabeth could also have been an uncle and aunt. 4. Nowhere in the Ancestry.com US Census data for Franklin, Clinton or Essex counties, New York, in 1840 or 1850, are there any Gibbo’s listed, by any spelling variant of the name (Jebo, Jibbo, Gebo, Gebeau, Gibbo, Gibeau, Gibault, etc.)]
Bef. 1850 thru 1863: From an email dated April 25, 2007, from Betty Rabideau to Charles Frakes. Subject: More about Reuben, etc.:
“I'm guessing that they (some of the Gibeau’s of Laprairie, Quebec, Canada) settled first near Keeseville, NY before 1850; then moved on to Malone, Franklin, NY. The parish records for St. John the Baptist Church, Keeseville, Clinton County, NY lists the baptism of Joseph Gibeau, son of Hubert Gibeau and Desanges Houlle, born Oct. 1854 and baptized 14 Jan. 1855. Godparents were Theo Siguoin and Sophie Gibeau.
The marriage record of Josephine Gibeau, daughter of Hubert Gibeau and Desanges Houlle, was 29 Oct. 1857, St. John the Baptist Church, Keeseville, NY to Theo Siguoin (no parents listed). She and her husband are found with her parents in the 1860 Census of Malone, Franklin County, NY. His name is not readable but from the marriage record we can deduct that the name should read Theo Seguoin.
Pelagie Gibeau, daughter of Hubert Gibeau and Desanges Houlle, married also at St. John the Baptist Church, Keeseville, NY on 22 Oct. 1863 to Pierre Seguoin, son of Amable Siguoin and Marie Lecuyer. This was her second marriage. Her first marriage was to Leandre Paison at an unknown date and place.”
Keesville, Essex county, New York (marked by the star) in relation to Montreal, Quebec; and Malone, Franklin county, New York. Keesville is on Lake Champlain. It appears Gladys Gibbo’s ancestral line (Hubert Gibeau, his wife Marie (Desanges Houlle) Gibeau and their children (including son Moyses Gibeau) may have moved from La Prairie, Quebec (near Montreal), to Keesville prior to moving to Malone.

Joseph Jeebo, age 6, male, born New York.”
A David Jeboo, also age 15 and born in New York, is listed as a Servant two households away, working for farmers William and Julia Merriam. The Merriam’s are recorded as having real estate worth $2500 and personal estate worth $450. By contrast, Moses Jeboo has no real estate and personal estate valued at $150. These are probably duplicate listings for the same David Jeboo, who is probably the son of Moses and works as a servant for the Merriam’s. 2. The ‘Tafed Secor’ name is a real mystery. My suspicion is these people spoke with thick accents of some type and the census taker had great difficulty transcribing the names. Tafed could easily be a phonetic problem with speaking and writing David—which in French is pronounced ‘Daveed’. Secor could be a poor transcription of the French word ‘sacre’ (pronounced sock-ray), which means sacred or holy. Hence we might have in this case a biblical reference, in French, to ‘holy David’. Secor could also be “Secon”, French for second, as in “David the second”, or “David Jr.”. 3. I find that having more than one child with the same name is not uncommon in colonial families, especially if one of them is a nephew or cousin living with their kinfolk. In other instances families wanted to ensure a particularly important name survived to be passed on. 4. The Jeboo-Jebo surname confusion also indicates a problem with trying to transcribe spoken names, another sign of possible thick accents among the speakers. 5. The “Problems with Names” website indicates that Jebo and Gebo are corruptions of the French name Gibeaut or Gibeault. I checked a dozen or so surrounding 1860 Census pages for Malone, New York and found these other surnames—Laplant, Lparl, Gtett, Wltett, Boyea, Grdham, Labeff, Labitt. LaPlant is clearly French. Labeff seems like it could be LaBoeuf, and Labitt could be LaFitte—both of which could also be French. 6. This couple has one child age 22 born in Canada, and another child age 20 born in New York, which suggests the family emigrated from Canada to New York about 1838-1840. 7. This Reuben and Elizabitte Jeebo may be Moses Gibbo’s parents (Hubert and Marie), or possibly an uncle and aunt. By 1870 they are living in Moses Gibbo’s household (see the 1870 Census data below.)]

I am related to him through his youngest son John S. Gibbo b.1879 who married Lavina Bodah. My grandmother Louva was their daughter…”
[Authors note: 1. Presumably Rosay (Rosa) Jeeboo is Moses Jeeboo’s wife, and the three youngsters are their three children. 2. This Moses Jeeboo is our Moses Gibbo, the son of Hubert and Marie (Desanges Houlle) Gibeau. Moses and Rosa are Gladys Gibbo’s grandparents. This makes them G2 (great-great) grandparents to Lee, Darlene and Cindy Purnell. This also makes them G3 grandparents to Jeff and Chris Purnell, and Kim Kramer. This also makes them G4 grandparents to Amy, Molly, and Abby Purnell, and to Drew and Karen Lawyer, and to Eric Kilton. That’s six generations back from the youngest present generation! Moses’ parents Reuben and Elizabeth Jebo take you back seven generations! 3. The message board note from Diane Robare is a lead as to the maiden name of Moses Gibbo’s wife, i.e. Rosella Fountain.]

[Author’s note: Possibly this Reuben Jebo is Moses Jeboo’s brother or a cousin. Reuben may be a corruption of Hubert.]
The red star marks the location of Malone, Franklin county, New York. It borders Quebec province, Canada, a predominantly French ethnic region, and the city of Montreal is about 60 miles away on the St. Lawrence river. The Gibbo surname is Canadian-French in its origins—from Gibeau and Gibault.

My great grandfather George owned a poolhall/bar on Main Street in Malone (the building is still there), he and his wife lived upstairs. My dad described him as "short, bald man who liked to eat a raw onion like you would eat an apple" (I can understand how this made a big impression on my dad as a child). George's wife was called "Gaggy" by my dad and aunt. Royal Maurice Gibbo was born 8-11-1898, died 11-17-1982 at Delmar, NY (suburb of Albany). He married Genevieve O. Rozon, born 7-11-1898, died 3-8-1997. They had two children, my aunt Margaret Mary (4-21-1922, in Malone, she is still alive, living in Guilderland, NY, close to Delmar) and Royal Maurice, Jr., my dad, (born 3-1-1924 in Malone, died 4-19-1993 in Burlington, VT). [Authors note: 1. The family name has changed from Jeboo in the 1860 Census to Jebo in the 1870 Census. 2. Reuben and Elizabeth Jebo are probably Moses’ parents Hubert and Marie (Desanges Houlle) Gibeau, and represent the 7th generation back from the youngest present generation. The available data supports the theory they are Moses’ parents:
• Albert Gibeau b. about 1769 m. 1796 to Victoire Lussier in LaPrairie, Quebec, and they had a son named Hubert or Philibert Gibeau b. 1797. He m. 1825 to Marie Desanges-Houlles.
• Hubert and Marie Gibeau had a son Moyse Gibeau b. 16 Sept. 1827 in LaPrairie, Quebec.
• In the 1870 Census of Malone, Franklin Co., New York Moses Gibbo, b. 16 Sept. 1827 according to his gravemarker, had an aging couple named Reuben b. 1794-1801 and Elizabeth (Elizabitte) b. 1805 in his household. All three were born in Canada.
• The name Reuben is probably a corruption of Hubert or Philibert.
• Moses Gibbo b. Sept. 16, 1827 had a brother named Reuben Gibbo who appears in the Malone Census in 1860 at age 30. This Reuben also appears in 1860's era Civil War records, and in the 1890 Veterans Census in Malone. The Civil War records place his year of birth at 1829.
• Hubert Gibeau and Marie Desanges-Houlles had a son named Hubert who was born 29 Sept. 1829 in Laprairie, Quebec, Canada.
• This is a second instance in this two generations of this family where the name Reuben is probably an Americanized corruption of the French name Hubert.]

In the 1860 and 1870 Census’ he is listed as a “Labourer”.]
1887-1890: From the 1910 United States Census of Charlton town, Saratoga county, New York, and the 1930 United States Federal Census of Los Angeles county, CA: “Alexander C. Alexander gives his current age differently in the two Census reports, causing the difference in the estimated year of their marriage, either 1887 or 1890. Emily gives consistent ages in the two Census reports that are consistent with a marriage year of 1887.”

[Authors Note: 1. In what is possibly the worst example of inaccurate transcription this writer has seen, the Ancestry.com online search index shows Alexander Gibbo’s name as “Mexander Wels”, and one of his daughters names is listed as “Irvin”. 2. To make matters worse, the original Census taker wrote the Gibbo surname down as “Thebo”. The “Thebo” family shown in this Census record from Waterbury, CT matches exactly what we know of the Alexander and Emily (Roy) Gibbo family. The error is the Census taker’s—these people are Alexander and Emily Gebo and their children. 3. Alexander and Emily are living next door to the household of Stephen and Phoebe Roy, who are Emily’s parents. Stephen and Phoebe’s son Philip Joseph Roy is Emily Roy’s brother, and he is mentioned in several other records in this chronology for Gladys Gibbo and her ancestors. 3. This demonstrates conclusively the Roy family is French-Canadian, as were the Gibbo’s.]

The red star marks the location of Waterbury, in the county of New Haven, Connecticut. Watertown lies to the northwest, and Naugatuck to the south. In the lower right corner is the city of New Haven. This is where Alexander and Emily (Roy) Gibbo lived from at least 1894 to 1902, based on US Census and City Directory data. A Joseph Gibbo, possibly Alexander’s uncle or other relation, is also recorded in Waterbury during this time.

1918: From an email dated Saturday, February 25, 2006, from Diane Robare to Charles Frakes, Subject: Alexander Gibbo: “…Here is more gossip from an Aunt of mine. I don't know how Alexander would have gone to California. I wonder if it was at the same time that my Grandfather went. They went by train and were involved in the great train wreck and if they had been sitting where they had asked to sit but couldn't, they would have been killed. I think they went in 1918 but am not sure of the year. It was right after the earthquake that destroyed San Francisco. They went to California (which was recommended by my grandmother's doctor) for my grandmother's health on the off chance that she could live longer out there because
the climate was better. It did help her but Wilfred was love sick for Lillian whom he had to leave behind so they came back so he could get married. Once back Grandma started failing again and then died. Her grandfather was Alexander’s brother John. Wilfred was her Uncle, son of John and Lavina.”
[Author’s Note: This Gibbo family oral-history is consistent with the data that Harry and Gladys (Gibbo) Purnell were probably married in 1917—as evidenced from US Census data and Harry’s WW I Draft Registration Card. It also helps explain how the Gibbo’s came to be in Los Angeles county. Alexander probably joined his brother John in going there for the mild climate and the employment opportunities.]

Entombment is to be in Angeles Abbey Mausoleum.
The Rev. Fred B. Trotter was a minister for the First Methodist Episcopal Church in Huntington Park, CA.”
The date for this photo is not known. The location is presumed to be southern California, in the vicinity of Los Angeles. Pictured are, presumably, five of the six Gibbo sisters. Gladys (Gibbo) Purnell is the second from the right.
The gravestone for Clarence Philip Roy, born 1875 and died 1949. Father listed as Philip J. Per US Census data Clarence was the son of Philip Joseph and Rose Roy. The gravesite is in the same area as Moses and Rosille Gibbo’s at the Notre Dame Cemetery in Malone, New York. Picture taken by Diane Robare, 18 May 2006.
