Dominick S. "Nick" Giacobello, 85,
of Girard,PA,
passed away suddenly, January 26, 2012
at St. Vincent Health Center.
Nick was born on September 19, 1926 in Erie,PA,
a son of the late Mariano and Maria Cassella Giacobello. At age 18 he worked on the Great Lakes Shipping as a porter. He enlisted in the Pennsylvania National Guard, then was inducted into active duty in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. After his discharge from the military, he worked at Anthony's Dry Cleaners at 25th and Peach Sts. In 1955 he started his own business, "Sam's" Shoe Repair in Erie, which later became Nick's Shoe Repair at 12th St. and Lincoln Ave. Nick moved his family and his business to Girard in 1967 and continued to run the business since its beginning. He also owned and operated Dominick's Pizza Shop in Girard from 1979-1982. He was a member of St. Johns Lutheran Church in Girard,
and was a Volunteer Fire Policeman for both the A. F. Dobler Hose and Ladder Company and the Erie County Fire Police Association. In addition to his parents, Nick was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen Adams Giacobello; his daughter, Linda Giacobello Aquillano; two sisters, Mary Casey Gambatese and Natalie Di Folco; and four brothers, Frank, Russell, Joseph and Anthony "Tony" Giacobello. He is survived by his second wife, Laura Pier Thom Giacobello, of Girard; his daughter, Mary Ann Luthringer, and her husband, Otto "Butch"; his son, Frank Dominick Giacobello, all of Erie; stepson, Jon E. Thom, and his wife, Mary Beth, of Tenino, Wash.; son-in-law, Richard Aquillano, of Erie; brother, Louis Giacobello, of Stewart, Fla.; four grandchildren, Kimberly Aquillano, Danny Aquillano, Alicia Wieczorek and her husband, Randy, and Patrick Luthringer; three great-grandchildren, Logan, Gavin and Mason Wieczorek; three step-grandchildren, Courtney, Brittney and Whittney Thom; and many nieces and nephews. Friends may call (Today) Friday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Daniel R. Edder Funeral Home, 309 Main St. East, Girard. Services will be held there on Saturday at 10 a.m. with Rev. Andrew Edwards officiating. Burial will be in the Girard Cemetery with full military honors. Memorials may be made to A.F.
