Surnames: Giachino
Dear sir,
all my family comes from Sparone, in Piedmont and we are acquainted with many Giachinos. Please, let me know some more info about your granpa and when he moved to America so that I can search the local registers and give you a precise answer.
Maybe during your visit to Italy in 1986 none in the town was old enough to remember of your granpa.About the woman he married, Teresa Pica, was she also born in Sparone? I think there may be some spelling error, because a very common
surname in Sparone is PICCO, not Pica.
Waiting for further infos.

Thank you for responding to my inquiry. You are likely correct about my grandmothers maiden name being Picco. I never had it written but only remember it being said.

My Grandfather emmigrated to the mining country in the upper penninsula of Michigan at the turn of the 20th Century. He came to live with a cousin in Laurium. He returned to Sparone at the urging of his cousin to take a bride, Teresa. He returned to work in the mines and raised a family of two sons and four daughters. After he was injured in the mine, they bought a farm in South Range and lived off of the milking cows and eggs produced. They lived a close life together and never lift the farm. They both died the same day in 1960, in their late seventies. They had a cousin Fiera who lived near them. My Grandfather never said much about his family in Italy that I recall. My Grandmother always spoke of her sisters who she corresponded with over the years.

When I visited Sparone it was in the Spring of 1986. I remember how impressed I was with the church and its beautiful wall paintings. I could not speak Italian but for a few words. My daughter Rene could speak and was with me. We went to what I believe was the town tavern where there were some men sitting at a table. We spoke to them and they sent out an inquiry asking about Giachino. Several people came to meet us but none were Giachino's. They said that there may be someone by that name some distance away at a farm and asked if I wanted to go there. I felt I had already imposed much on those friendly people and we left.

I read your message concerning Giachino's from Sparone. A great grandfather on my Father's side was Pietro Giachino. He was born September 14, 1878 in the town of Sparone in Piemonte. He had two brothers, Giovanni and Pietro, and three sisters, names unknown. He married Domenica Picco of nearby Cansichio in 1903. He left Italy in 1906 to join his brothers in America; his wife and daughter, Madalene, my Grandmother followed the next year. Pietro died in a mining accident in Mullan, Idaho in January of 1912. I am interested if there is any connection?

I am interested in your reference to the Giachino family from Sparone. My ancestry goes back to Maria Domenica Giachino who married Petri Antonio Pasciutto on 28 Feb 1802 in Sparone, Torino, Piedmonte, Italy. Her father's name was Jois Michaelem Giachino from Sparone. Other surnames in my ancestry include: Aimonetto, Coppo, Vallino, Giorgis. My Gr-Grandmother, Marianna Pasciutto (born 16 MaR 1851 in Sparone) married Domenico Giorgis of Praie. Although I have a lot of information on the Giorgis family, I do not have as much on my Pasciutto-Giachino line. Please let me know if you have any info you can share on this line of the family.
Thank you,
Joye

I'm from Laurium MI. I'm looking for relatives in Silver Bow County in Montana. There was a John Giachino that left Calumet - Laurium and left for Montana. Also our oral history of our family stated that our Great Grandfther Giacomo or James had brothers and cousins that went out west. Our family in Calumet - Laurium housed relatives from Italy and we are from Sparrone.
