Denis,
Naomi's husband and my father were cousins.
My father, Mike Wilson, was the son of
Michael Abram "Hooks" Ghormley and Lillie
Wilbanks Ghormley. Michael Abram and Lillie
divorced soon after my father was born and
when Lillie remarried to a Mr. Wilson, my
father took Mr. Wilson's last name. Thus
leaving me as an undocumented Cherokee
because my father denied his Cherokee
heritage.
Michael Abram Ghormley and William H.
Ghormley were brothers, both sons of Michael
Orlando and Nancy E. (Nannie) David Ghormley.
I believe that William H. Ghormley is buried
at Adair or Tahlequah, Oklahoma with other
members of the Ghormley family. Elizabeth
Foreman was 5/8ths Cherokee and Nannie David
Ghormley was Cherokee and born in the
Cherokee Nation. I am positive that William
H. Ghormley is on the Cherokee Rolls and I
may have a copy of his parents original
application.
My mother passed away before Christmas 1999
and I have not worked on this for quite some
time. I live in Houston, Texas and plan to
go to the Clayton Library this Wednesday.
Where do you live? The Clayton Library has
a Ghormley family book entitled "Yesterday,
Today and Tomorrow" and a manila folder con-
taining interesting information from a Tulsa,
Oklahoma newspaper regarding Michael Orlando
Ghormley. I also have a copy of this article
and believe that this information came from
one of Naomi's brother-in-laws or sons. I
will look for this information and send it
to you if you will give me your mailing
address.
I am going to Muskogee, Oklahoma at the end
of May and plan to go to the library there.
That is where I found the Cherokee application
on Michael Orlando and Nannie David Ghormley's
family.
My home telephone is (713) 721-7723 and you
can call me collect at night or on weekends.
My e-mail at work is
MHUFF@BRACEPATT.COM. I
grew up in Muskogee which is 30 miles from
Tahlequah, Oklahoma. There is a lot of mis-
information about the Ghormleys in the book
and on the Ghormley family website, but also
a lot of good information. William H. was
also a very prominent person in the Tahlequah
area.
