Dear Sherman, I would like to get a copy of Nolan's book from you. Please send me an Email with price and address to send a check. I live in Costa Rica but have a US account and will have you send it to my sister in California whom I will see soon since we are traveling on a "family history" trip to Ireland this May. Also, please send me any additional information you have on the family before leaving Ireland. The theory we have is that Hugh, the first one to the Colonies, changed the name from Gormley to Ghormley (putting the H from his first name after the G where it would not change the pronunciation) either before or after coming to distinguish his line as Protestant (Presbyterian) vs Catholic to avoid discrimination. Although this could have been done in Ireland before Hugh to avoid the persecution from the British during the Implantation of Northern Ireland because they were taking all lands away from the Catholics, I have still found no one in Ireland (phone directories etc on the Internet, with the name spelled with the h. A bit less certain is the idea that the Gormleys became Presbyterian under John Knox in the lowlands of Scotland because there was a famine at that time (pre Potato Famines) that caused a large number of Irish from the north to migrate for about 70 years to lowland Scotland and then return. These could be the same bunch who had been hired by the British to fight against Braveheart and at the battle charge switched allegiance to the Scottish side! But all this is mere speculation and ledgend. I look forward to hearing from you. Sincerely,
thomas.ghormley@gmail.com

Hi Thomas,

Excited to hear what you find in Ireland!
My husband always thought that the H was added to distinguish between the early immigrants (Hugh) prior to the American Revolution and the later immigrants during the famine.
We found that the Ghormley's used Gormley for awhile after arriving, been awhile since I found some evidence of the name change time frame, will see if I can dig that back up...

your grandm.in law married Dwight 7/15/1933. Dwight was born 12/21/1907. Their son Charles Maurice was born 4/28/1934. Asked your grandmother if she remembers Narin Nolin Ghormley who was married to Maurice Ghormley, who would be brother to Dwight. Being they named a son after him, I'm sure she should remember. She may also know about the family history that Narin wrote on the Ghormley line. I have the orginal script she wrote. My sister after 40 yrs of vague memory on it gave it to me in early 2000? and I spent two yrs. rewriting it. I gave up offering it to people because people thought it a scam. I had an email from a Thomas Ghormley last night and he found me in an old email from 2008 and asked me for a copy. The first few pages of the biography was mising and after a five yr. search I found a copy I knew existed out there somewhere, and I found that Narin's daughter was still alive and I talked to her. I found I was only missing about a paragraph and the cover pages. I'm guessing that the reason I have the original is that my grandmother who knew a lot of oral history contributed stories both to her and Pearl Ghormley who wrote the book "Yesterday, today, and tomorrow. gave Narin and Pearl stories about W.C. Ghormley, his father and gr. grandfather. (mine also by the way) I don't have all the information in my family tree that the book has, but I do have a lot of dates and pictures. You are welcome to see it. My email is smace@wowway.com. I need your email in order to send a invitation to my family tree. If you want to talk to me about the script I will give my phone number in an email. I don't answer the phone until the person I.D. themself. (Were very tire of advertisers) If you want more information I willing to give it. I put in the order for a copy to the printer for the man who called last night. It is the first time in a few years I have had a request for it. I would like to make it in one trip and the printer told me she could not get to it till next week. I am retired, but I still work part time at a printing co. myself. (not that kind of printing.) I don't push this and anymore donot usually mention it; but I see the close family ties here and I'm sure your grandmother knows the names I am talking about. She may even have known my grandmother and father John & Charlotte Petty/Ghormley. The cost is under $20. and the lady today couldn't tell me exactly as she charges by the page. I can ship free from my job. Its one of the perks. The best way if you decide not too, is show my tree to her. There are stories in it of the family. SHERMAN

I really don't know if you will get this. I just discovered this tonight. I have two ancestry trees going on at the same time. Your message was on one and I open it and posted my message thinking it was recent. Your grandm. is probably deceased now. I apologize for the previous contact and my mistake. SHERMAN

Sherman:

I ran across your posting while researching my 3rd great grandmother, Mary Ann "Polly" Ghormley. She was born 28 Jan 1820 in Alabama. She died 27 Jun 1882 in Jackson County, Tennessee. She is buried in Flynn Cemetery with her husband, Andrew M. Flynn. She and Andrew are in the 1850 Census for District 8, Jackson County, Tennessee. Andrew is in the 1840 Census for District 8, Jackson County, Tennessee with a female age 50-60 (probably his mother). In 1840, there is only one Ghormley living in Jackson County. Michael Gormley is in District 8, Jackson County as age 40-49 living with 1 female age 20-29 (right age for Mary Ann) and 1 female age 40-49. I figure this is the Michael Ghormley that married Melinda Vaught in 1814 in Blount Co. Tennessee. I am trying to figure out if Michael and Melinda could be the parents of my Mary Ann Ghormley.

In your post, you said you are willing to send your book out for the cost of shipping and printing. If your book would help me research Mary Ann, I'd be interested.

I will help you on any Ghormley information as I have a great deal on them. Is your grand mother's maiden name Vanderslice? I Don't have any information about Charles D. Ghormley and I would be grateful if you could fill me in on his family. Births, deaths, children, and marriages. I would like to know your birthdate for your grandmother also. I can send you an invite to the family tree so you can see if I have any information useful too you. I and my cousin our currently proof reading a family history of the Ghormley's that was done by Narin Ghormley in the 1920's and 30's, I did the first retype of the original hand written copy and am the owner of it. I did some research and came up with Naomi Vanderslice b. 3/16/1913 and found two death dates, but that can't be right as you said she is interested? Dwight was b. 12/21/1907-d.5/2/1980 in Pasadena, Harris, Texas. They were married 7/15/1931. I didn't see their children records so if you could fill me in I'd appreciate it. Thanks (Correct any thing I might have gotten wrong.) Sherman

I am looking through Narin's biography because the name Dwight Ghormley sounded familiar. W.H. Ghormley had eight children. Another of his sons was Maurice b. 1/13/1903. Maurice married Narinn Nolin b. 1/15/1927. Narin did the family history with the stories of your grand parents and Mine. Hello Cousin! Narin states their marriage 7/15/1933. Can you tell me which is correct? I was making copies of Narin's book available, but I had to stop as we are in the process of proof reading. My cousin is a lawyer and he will probably copy right it as that is what he did with my grandmother biography. I hope to have it done in about a year. He is going slow right now as he is drawing close to retirement and this has had to take a lower priority. If you want a copy please make a note of this and remind me of it later. I only charge for the printing and the shipping which has aways been about $20.00. In the mean time if you have any questions feel free to ask. You are intitles to have your Cherokee citizenship. W.H. Ghormley register number is 14232. We do have different gr. grandmother's as Michael first wife was Elizabeth Taylor. (Not the movie star) She died in Texas. I really don't understand how you qualify as the Ghormley's are from Ireland. It must be because my gr. gr. grandmother was full blood and was forced onto the reservation. Michael married my gr. grandmother and they lived on the reservation. My mother lived there also until her late teen. According to Narin you've got a number and that's all you need.
