I saw your message about the Ghormley/May family and have found something that may help you but am not sure. In my Ghormley papers, I found a John Ghormley married to Margaret McClure. They had seven children. One of the girls, Mary Emily b. May 20, 1848, married James May, Oct. 17, 1867, d. Nov. 10, 1872 (I assume this is "her" death date, if so, she was very young when she died). They had two children, Walter and Howard.

Another child, John Jr. b. Dec. 1, 1861, married Sarah Mills June 14, 1885. Their children were Charles, William, Jessie, John, Jasper, and James.

Do not have any information (yet) about where they lived. This information came from a book called "Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow" by Pearl Ghormley.

My grandfather was Walter Frank Ghormley and great grandfather was Walter Scott Ghormley. I hope this information will help you out. I am fairly sure there is at least one May family currently living in the Stilwell area. Let me know if any of this sounds like it fits.

Thanks for the info. It's very interesting. Do you know if these Ghormley's and May's were from Kentucky? The given names are interesting:my father was:Howard E. May b7/19/1904 in Stillwell,Indian Terr.(OK),d.2/26/91 in Ponca City, OK. His brother's name was George Walter May b.7/7/1900 in Stilwell,d.12/30/23 in Sapulpa, OK. Will May (my grandfather) married Ida Ann Howard in Stillwell (Howards came from Rockwood TN). But,I never heard my father mention any family by the name of May in Stillwell. He did mention Uncle John Ghormley, and I found the newspaper article mentioned in my first posting. I found John Ghormley (Roll #1953) on the Final Rolls (Dawes 1898-1902)of Citizens and Freemen of the Five Civilized Tribes in Indian Territory (1898-1902) in Cherokees by Blood - but haven't looked it up yet, so don't know if anything is there. If you should come up with any connection, I would appreciate the info. If I do, I will let you know. Thanks again. Carroll

I forgot to ask you about the book you mentioned (Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow by Pearl Chormley). Is it a published book that cn be obtained from a library or book store? Also I see that you and Marsha Harjo may have the same great grandfather. I hope you are able to put together a lot of info. Thanks for your input. I really appreciate it. My e-mail is cpunches@poncacity.net.

You know, the info you sent me about John Ghormley is about the right time frame, I guess. Do you know anything about the May family currently in Stillwell? As you can see, my problem is that I really don't know anything about my grandfather (William May) except the story (no documented facts) about him being from Kentucky as an orphan - going to a farm (possibly Aunt and Uncle - where I don't know). I don't know when he got to Stillwell, but that is where he and my grandmother were married and lived at least until he died. The family then moved to Sapulpa OK, but my Dad still visited in Stillwell when I was little, but I don't really remember much about it. In Dad's later years he and Mom visited an old friend (I'm thinking maybe her name was Jenny Goss?.

Hi Carroll,
Sometimes it takes me a while to check my messages. I have been reading through the information I have and it does not say anything about where the Ghormley's and May's I told you about were born or died. But the names do seem to fit. I checked the book out of the Tahlequah Public Library. You could probably get it through your library on inter-library loan. If not, let me know and I can copy what I have for you.

If your grandfather died in Stilwell, do you think the funeral home would have a record that might have some information on it or have you already tried that? I could check it out for you if you want, let me know what month/year he died.

I do not know about the May family living in Stilwell now. I found a listing in the phone book.

I will keep looking for anything that seems to match and have recruited my mother's help. She likes to do this kind of thing.

Will be sending Marsha an e-mail. How exciting to find family you've never met.

Keep searching!

Thank you for the information on the book. I will check with our local library.

Your Mary Emily (married James May) could be a relative. It's the closest I've come to anything promising.

Idon't think my grandfather (William H. May) actually died in Stillwell (possibly Vinita), but they were living there at the time and his body was brought back there. No death certificate is on file. He is buried in the cemetary in Stillwell. He died Oct. 1, 1914. If it isn't too much trouble, I would be very grateful if you would check to see if there's a funeral home record. In those days I don't know if a funeral home was always involved.

I found my grandparents on the 1900 census in Stillwell: District No. 73, Enumeration District 36, Sheet No. 8. At that time they were farmers and rented. His occupation was "ferrier". I showed that he was born in Kentucky and that his Mother and Father were born there, wife Ida A. mothere of 1 child - none living - born in Tennesse.

My e-mail address is cpunches@poncacity.net. It might be easier to communicate through e-mail.
