Looking for information about my orphaned grandfather; Garfield Gholston

My grandfather was Garfield Gholston, born July 1913, died January 1984. He claimed that he was born in Gary, Indiana and was orphaned when his parents died in some kind of natural disaster. He said that a lady (named Gholston possibly) helped him and fed him some, but he also said that he was left to fend for his own from the age of 8 on. We are unsure as to whether Gholston was his true name, or the name he adopted.

He believed that he was of Native American decent, but he might possibly have been of African American heritage, or maybe both.

If anyone has any information I would greatly appreciate it! I have been trying for some time to try and find out what my heritage is. I'm hoping at the very least that there might possibly be a family story of an orphaned boy passed down that someone may remember.

Thanks!

Grandfather

You're message surprised me to no end,, we have to get to the bottom of this. My family of Gholston's lived in Gary Indiana at that time and I want to know what the hell is going on we were the only ones in Gary at that time and my aunt who is still living at 98 doesn't and hates me to research the family..

Please give more information if you have it. and I will find out something for you.

Thanks,

Jana

Hi Jana!

I am so happy that you responded to my post! It's really hard to be missing such a large part of your ancestry. It's odd but my grandmother hates for me to research this subject too. She tells me that my grandfather, when he was living, told her many different "stories" about his childhood. She doesn't go into specifics, and would only tell me that he told her he was from Gary and that he was orphaned. I do know that in his later years he wanted very badly to find out where he came from.

I'm sorry that I don't have more information for you!

Did you ask your aunt about a boy named Garfield? Why do you think she doesn't want you to research your family? Do you have a large family? Can I ask your ethnicity? It might clue us in as to whether or not we could be related. My granfather had dark skin and dark curly hair w/ light eyes.

This is very exciting! I hope we're on to something here! :)

We should exchange email addresses and then I can send you a picture of him and you can see if there's any resemblence whatsoever.

I hope to hear from you soon.

Jana what is your aunts name? My grandma used to know the womans name who took care of my grandpa for awhile, but she can't remember it. If she heard the name though, she might remember.

Dear Kristi,, my last message didn't go through, I do know that we have Cherokee descent although basically we are english and some Irish,, I am blond with blue eyes although my father Richard has coal black hair and dark skin.

My gut feeling is that my grandmother may have been the one that helped Garfield if there was anyone that would have, she always had room at the dinner table for anyone. her children were

Velma Liley 1902
Randolph Perry 1910
Homer Neil 1903
Alma 1916
Howard William 1921
Donald Jack 1923
Hollis Alva 1928
Richard Neil 1926

My Grandfather was William Abner born in 1884 in Roane County Tennessee, and he met his wife Maudie in Arkansas,, they traveled to El Reno Oklahoma and then north to Gary for the Railroad because the Rock Island RR, wasn't paying as well,, he worked until his retirement for EJE railroad in Gary. My father also worked for EJE all his life and we now live in Lafayette, Indiana. I ran upstairs to talk to my father about this but he was not born until 1926 and he really couldn't recall anyone. He did want to tell you that the family lived on Tyler Street in Gary and may for a time have lived in downtown Gary. Just because I don't have him listed doesn't mean there wasn't a connection. I can't explain why my aunt Velma feels the way she does I just don't pay attention..

Keep in touch Kristi, there has to be something there somewhere.

Sincerely,
Jana
By all means send that photo I am dying to see that face,, I will know in an instant if he is related,, you can't miss the features in this family.janaghol@dcwi.com
