Bianca,
My husband's father, Anastasios Demetrios Ghikas, is originally from the Greek Island of Evvoia, the large island East of Athens. My father-in-law says that his ancestors migrated to Greece from Albania. He says the name is not purely Greek and he had heard that it comes from the Albanian for "George." There are still a few Ghikases on Evvoia, but my husband's uncles and aunt moved to the Athens area. Many of the cousins have moved here to the US or to Canada.
One famous Ghikas is Gregory II Ghikas - Prince of Wallachia. Another is the famous Greek artist Nikos Hadjikyriakos-Ghikas.
We would be happy to correspond about the family and to see how closely you are related to us.

I don't know if we're related or not but ..my grandfather was called Alexandros Dimitrios (or Demetrios) Ghikas. He had several brothers. They all travelled a lot. He ws born somewhere in Greece, studied in England and France ( Marseille). He could speak these 3 languages fluently. He spent most of his life in Tanzania where he had many coffee plantations. That's where he met my grandmother, who's Swiss. .Both my grandmother, Rosemarie Ghikas, and uncle, Dimitri Ghikas, live in Bern, Switzerland. My grandfather had 3 children with my grandmother, 1 son and 2 daughters, but also had a child before he met her, when he was a student in England. He had a romance with a Polish girl and she got pregnant without him knowing. I actually got to meet the "child". She lives in Manchester, UK. He died in England in 1978, 3 years before I was born. There are a few Ghikases left in Tanzania, one of them being Marius Ghikas. Some of them have moved to Australia What I know about the Ghikas History is that they were from Macedonia. That's about all I know. Hope this will be of any help!

Hey!!!!!! Wow, I can't believe it either! I never thought I'd meet a relative on this site. I don't remember what I worte cos it was some time ago but it was effective. So you're Marius's son?! I am Cynthia Ghikas's daughter Samantha. Now I'm not sure any more but Marius must be her cousin, right? My mum's fahter was Alexandros Dimitrios Ghikas. They lived in Tanzania. My mum moved to Switzerland when she was 18 to study and then got a job as a secretary. She then met my father who's English and they had my brother and then me in 1981. I went on a trip with my granny, Rose-Marie Ghikas (born Daepp) in 1995, when I was 13. I went to visit my mum's cousin, Esther Kinsey and her family. Saw my great aunt Ruth who's still living in her small house in Arusha. I remember seeing Marius walking down the road barefoot, but I never met him. Tell me about you and what you know of the Ghikas family!! I'm so excited!
Hope to hear from you soon,
Sam

Hey again. Just read yr email again and you say you don't know anything about the Ghikas family, how come?
I'll tell you what I know, and it's not much: My grandfather, Alexandros Dimitrios Ghikas, was born in Tanzania (i think). His parents came from different parts of Greece. Lesvos and Athens. They fled the country because of the Turcs. He studied in England and France (Marseille). He met a girl when he was still a student. She was Polish. They had a romance but soon he had to go back to Tanzania. What he didn't know was that she was pregnant with their daughter. She went back to Poland where her boyfriend was waiting for her. The baby (Barbara) was born and they both raised her as their own. They had to flee when the Germans came and took a boat to England.
Meanwhile, my grandfather who's family owned several coffee fields went home to marry Rose-Marie Daepp (her real first name is Emma). She had moved from Switzerland to Tanzania when she was a child, with her parents, 3 sisters and brother. They kind of took a chance, went on a boat, thinking it was going to America when in fact it was heading to Africa. She was a nurse there and later became a teacher. They lived between Moshi and Arusha (2 towns very close to the Kilimandjaro). My mum, Cynthia Ana Rosanna Ghikas, was born in 1953, the next year it was her sister Christina. Dimitri was born 4 years later. They had a very good life but the kids were not happy. They were sent to public school and would only see their parents on weekends (if they weren't busy) and on holiday. My granny was a very tough mother. She didn't take care of her kids like she should have. My mum sufferred a lot from the distance (she was in a school in Nairobi, Kenya) and the tough british education she was getting. She left Africa when she was 18. She did secretarial studies in Switzerland (the French part) and got a job in Lausanne. One day she was told not to return to Tanzania because the state had taken all my grandfather's coffee plantations and they had no money.
Meanwhile, my uncle Dimitri Ghikas, a brilliant student, went to Oxford University. But he was soon diagnosed with manic-depression and was sent back to Africa. He shortly left for Switzerland.
My parents met in 1977. My grandfather died the next year from cancer. He is buried in England. Just before he died, he had met his unknown daughter Barbara. My mum met her at his funeral. My brother is called Alexander after him.
Christina moved to England. She got married, got two sons, Andrew and Ian and lived in Northamberland (close to Scotland) until about 1999. They now live south of Madrid.
My grandmother left Tanzania in 1987. She's been living in Bern, Switzerland ever since. I don't have a lot of contact with her.
My parents divorced when I was 9. My mum lives in Montreux now. She looks very Greek and has my grandfather's nose.
I don't know who's still living in Tanzania now apart from the Swiss part of the family but I know that some Ghikas went to Australia.
Barbara told me most of what I know. She lives in Manchester. I could give you her details if you like.
And I've been living in London for 3 years now. I'm on a fine art course. My brother is a musician and he lives in Lausanne, Switzerland.
I hope you found that interesting. If you know sth let me know!
talk soon!
