Irish Ghees

The name Ghee is also found in Co Longford in Ireland. Several brothers of THomas Ghee moved to Dublin during the 1940's and changed their names to McGhee because Ghee wasn't a very Irish name.

Today there are several Ghees still in Lonford including one family in Tullamore Co Offaly. My grandmother Brigid Ghee is 90 and still lives in Longford. We haven't checked our family history but anyone who knows about the the Ghee's who went to Dublin during the 30's and 40's I would be grateful if you could pass on information.

My grandmother was Mary Ghee and was your grandmothers sister-in-law. I know a bit about the Dublin connection of the family which I can share with you. I am researching the family as well. There is a contact in Scotland where John Ghee originally came from also searching for information on John's wife who was Bridget Hagan also from Longford. Regards for now. Chris

My maiden name is Ghee and my great grandfather was William Ghee from Longford-wife was Hanora Duffey (I think that is spelled correctly). My grandfather was John James Ghee, born in NYC 1888 and moved to Philadelphia as a child. We are still in Philadelphia. My sister and I are the only two Ghees from our line, as far as I know. I am sure you are more knowledgable. There was a Mary Ghee, sister to my grandfather who married a McCoy. I should probably be related in some way and if you would be willing to tell me about Dublin and the Scottish connection, I would be very grateful. Looking forward to your reply.

Hello Alyse I hope I may be able to help. I remember my grandmother Mary Ghee from Lisduff, Co. Longford receiving a letter from a cousin in New York fifty years ago when I was a young man. He had just retired so I knew we had relations in New York. My g.g.father was John Ghee 1867 to 1940 and g.g. mother Bridget Hagen 1869 to 1940. If you search Griffiths valuation in AskaboutIreland and Ghee's in Co. Longford you may find which townland your Ghee's came from.

Thank you very much, Christopher! I can't wait to have a look at AskaboutIreland. My great grandfather, William had a large family, some children were born in Connecticut and the last 2 were born in New York City. I saw a Thomas Ghee who had the same trade as my gg father, Marble Polisher. They must have been brothers. I believe Thomas was the elder of the two. My family is still in the monument business, the next two generations, both John, carried it on, both in Philadelphia. I'll let you know what I find.

Joseph McGhee was my grandmothers brother. Another correspondent johannafla is also a relation of yours I believe. If your Grandmother was Margaret (Madge) this confirms we are both related. I have more information if you require it.

I think my grandmother was older as Margaret was her stepdaughter. Margaret's mother died at 26. So your grandfather married his sisters stepdaughter..Margaret's father's surname was Russell and I am on the trail locating information about this branch of the family. He was a farmer in North county Dublin. I was at the recent family funeral of Vincent. If you are interested I will send you all the information I have on that side of my family tree.
