Hello June,

Thank you for your reply. My mother, Betty Jean Schmutz Hayes is a daughter of Alma Hartmann and John Lester Schmutz. My grandmother, Alma Frieda Hartmann Schmutz, was a daughter of Mary Louis Manz and Henry William Hartmann. Mary Louis Manz was a daughter of Anna Marie Gfeller and Friedrich Manz. Anna Maria Gfeller was the fourth child of Anna Maria Moser and Peter Gfeller.

Do you have information on the ancestry of Peter Gfeller? His father was Ulrich Gfeller; his grandfather was Christian Gfeller. Do you any information beyond that?

I do not have informatoin on Edwin Herman Gfeller. Was his mother Anna Buche?

I don't know whether the book is available. The Geary County Historical Society in Kansas may have a copy.

What did you find on the Internet regarding Peter Gfeller?

Terrill,
I am still searching and putting all the information together. It takes lots of adding and subtracting dates and cross ref. Peter Gfeller was born 6 April 1809. He was 5'5 with black hair and brown eyes.He took a teaching position at Obergoldbach, parish of Biglen when 20 years old. At age 24, he was one of four applicants for the position of schoolteacher at Walkringen. He got the job. Peter remained in the position 20 years. He was not only an excellent teacher; he was also a piano tuner with great musical ability and could play several string instruments. Anna Maria Moser born Biglen 25 Mar. 1819. Her parents were Johannes Moser from Biglen born 30 Jan 1791 died 13 April 1840 and Anna Lugenbucael Von Grosshochstratten from Signau born 31 May 1793 died 29 Sep 1842. Married 2 July 1813. the Moser's were a very affluent family in Biglen and their history can be traced back to 1510. Peter Gfeller married Anna Maria Moser 16 Oct 1835 at the age of 26, Anna was 16. While still living in Switzerland thirteen children were born. At age 44 Peter went to the Passport Office 26 Mar.1853 to apply for immigration to an unknown land over 4,000 miles away. Three servents and a cook accompanied Anna and the children to America. The boats name was Roger Stewart Arrived in New York 29 May 1853.
I have to run for now..If you would like more information let me know.

Hi, I have just discovered your post, albeit wrote in August 2000.
My name is Maureen Gefaell and part of a large family in the UK. Our eldest know ancester is Ullrich Gefaell, born in 1800 and dies in 1858. We have records of family tree decending from Ulrich, but know nothing of his parents, possible siblings or family.
I would be extremely grateful if you would share what ever knowledge you may have. We believe Ulrich came from Baden in Germany and arrived in the UK working as a clockmaker.
I just wondered if our surnames may be connected.
Regards Maureen. e-mail maureen.baxter@btopenworld.com.
