Hi, Marge-

Perhaps it would help if you told us a bit more about what you are looking for in York County records. What is the earliest information on this Geyer family that you know? Do you know if your Geyers descend from George Henry Geyer and Maria Rosina Fishel who appear in the records of First Moravian Church, York, but who lived in Gettysburg?

Hanson P Geyer is shown in the 1880 census with his wife and 4 children. Trying to find out his parents names.
Hanson's father was in the civil war. They lived in Cashtown,PA and Hanson's wife was from Bendersville, her name was Anna Jane Witherall(sp).
Hanson lived with his grandfather during the civil war.
Hanson's death certificate lists father as Peter Schol.
Thanks,
Marge

Marge-

I'm confused I guess. Does Hanson P. Geyer's death certificate list his mother's name? How did he get the surname Geyer if his father is Peter Schol? Was his mother a Geyer?

Joan,
This is part of the problem.
Hanson P. was a Geyer and the d/c does not list his mothers name. Hanson's wife (Anna Jane) was a Witherall.
I can't understand the Father's last name either. Unless Schol was his middle name. But if you look at the 1880 census there is a Peter Schol. Have sent for Anna Jane's death cert., this may help. But if the same child provided the info. , this is the problem I keep running into.
There is also a George W. Geyer listed in this census.
Thanks for your reply.

I've followed the GEYER's post with great interest. I have the same problem. On my Grandfather John GEYER ( born in Vienna, Austria), marriage certificate in Milwaukee, WI., it shows his mother as Maria GEYER and his father as Leopold RATH. I have never seen or heard of another person with the surname RATH. And have always wondered why he took his mother's name. My father never mentioned any of this and it was upon his death, that I found the certificate of his parents marriage that had this information.

Maybe the last name is actually the middle name.
But I agree it is a puzzlement.

Surnames: Rath, Geyer
'... I have never seen or heard of another person with the surname RATH. ..."

This is a little off-topic, but there were Rath families in Milwaukee as early as 1849 when David Rath and Maria Kuchuk were married. Their marriage announcement was placed in the local German newspapers. Unfortunately, in 1850, Davis placed notices in these same papers warning the community about Maria!
Other Rath families are found in the German papers as late as 1931 - some of the 30+ entries or references found in the local resource "Milwaukee's German Newspapers; an index of death notices and related items" (1844-1950). This remains an ongoing independent project originated in 2007, and compiled and edited by Gary R. Rebholz.
However, there are many about 90 Geyer entries in the most current version of the index. (The large archive of newspapers and the index are not available online.)
