According to Janie Spencer, I am descended from Asa (Asabel?) Gewin, Sr., b. abt 1735 in VA, d. aft. 1820 in NC. He was the father of Levi Guin/Gewin, b. abt 1787 in NC, married Nancy ? bef 1817 and d. aft 1850 in AL. Do you have this line? If so, who was Asa's father and mother? Can you confirm dates? Levi left NC for Al in the early 1800s. Any help would be appreciated.

Asabel's father was Thomas Gewin, son of Christopher Gewin, the first Gewin in America. I found a note that Thomas was born in Edgecombe, N.C. in 1706 but Edgecombe wasn't founded at that time. His father received a land grant in 1704 in Nansemond County, VA. I have found that he was an early Virginia Quaker, which I had suspected for 25 years or more.

Thanks, Loraine. I have since found much information on this family. "The Heritage of Lamar County Alabama", published by Heritage Publishing Consultants, and "Moores Bridge, Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, 1825-1990, Vol II" by Maggie Hubbard Suddath, both have a lot of information on my Guin/Gewin line. They are both available in the special records section of Samford University library in Birmingham. I hope to put up a Shaw website shortly with all that I have uncovered thanks to tips and clues and solid information provided by people like you who were willing to share what they knew and to family knowledge and records.
