Gordon-
My maiden name is Gewecke
I have a Gewecke family history that was compiled in 1962 for a Gewecke family reunion in Nebraska. It is quite extensive and I have been searching for the past hour - so positive I could find your father, and hence your grandparents for you. I have found a John Clifford Gewacke (alternative spelling, but in the same family) born on 10/30/1907. Married Dorothy Jeanette Knight on Aug 16, 1942. The dates seem too early, but thought I would offer the information in case it would be the right one.
There are a couple of other "John" Gewecke's included in the book, but they were born in the late 1800's.
There is a Conrad Gewecke who was born in Illinois and it is believed that he married and lived in Illinois (probably the Chicago area). If this is your grandfather, his descendants are not listed in the book because when the book was written in 1962 a search for living descendants was not productive.
If any of this sounds like it may be information you are looking for, or if you find more specific information about your father's family and can give me more info, I would be happy to share any information I can. Good Luck!

Hi Donna, thanks so much for your reply. My father, John, passed away in October 1978. My mother had remarried and we had been adopted by our stepfather. My father's birthdate was Jan. 1, 1912, and I believe he had a brother named Robert. That is the extent of my knowledge of my family, if I learn anything else I will let you know.

I had grandparents in Des Plaines also. My father was Theodore H. and had a brother Henry. I was born in 42 in Canada but my parents were there for a few years and returned to Chicago area in late 42. We were raised in Glenview.

This is an old thread, but I thought I'd post some public notices I turned up in researching a related family in Des Plaines. There's also a very brief mention of Henry Gewecke in the History of Cook County associated with Rose Munsterman's line.

HENRY GEWECKE/ROSIE MUNSTERMAN - PUBLIC NOTICES

Cook County Herald
March 29, 1946
(Note – there is PHOTO WITH ARTICLE)
Mr and Mrs. Henry Gewecke, 540 Fifth Ave., Des Plaines, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary March 18 at St. John's Church, Lawrence and Prospect Road. Over 100 attended the anniversary service conducted by Pastor Bergstraesser. Mr. and Mrs. Magers sang a beautiful duet. A reception followed in the parish house, which had been attractively decorated in white and gold. Henry Gewecke Jr., eldest son of the couple, acted as toastmaster at the program following the anniversary service ... among those present was Edwin Boesenberg, who acted as best man at their wedding. John Gewecke, who also served in that capacity 50 years ago, was unable to be present. The two bridesmaids have passed away ...

Miss Rose Munsterman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dick Munsterman, members of a pioneer family in this area, became the bride of Henry Gewecke, March 18, 1896, in a ceremony that occured at the same church where the anniversary service was held.

Mr. and Mrs. Gewecke started housekeeping on a farm at River and Rand Roads, later moving to a place at Dam No. 2. They later returned to the Munsterman homestead farm, residing in that area until two years ago when they moved to Des Plaines.

In addition to Henry, they have two other children. Theodore, Glenview, and Mrs. Elsie Hodges, Tampa Florida.

Chicago Tribune
Feb. 4, 1965
GEWECKE -- Rose W. Gewecke of Des Plaines, beloved wife of Henry F., dear mother of Henry D., Elsie G. Raymond, Theodore, and the late Josephine Heuer, eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, sister of the late Herman Munstermann ... Interment Ridgewood.

Chicago Tribune
17 Feb 1938
HEUER - Josephine Heuer, nee Gewecke, beloved wife of Edward J., dear mother of Raymond, Shirley and Richard, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Gewecke, sister of Henry, Elsie and Theodore ... Interment Ridgewood Cemetery.
