Anybody know anything about the name. I can find no clues outside of my immediate family.

Frank D. a physician from Heidleberg University was born in Prussia and supposedly relocated to Mexico and then New Orleans, LA with Maximillan. His name has died out and no records can be found before his employ at Turo Infirmary in New Orleans as chief surgeon, 1965? I believe. First surgeon after the civil war and infirmary reopened. Thanks

I am looking at a book on Abe Lincoln and on page 47 there is a picture of a slave market in Atlanta. Above the office next door is a sign: F. Geutebruck

The sign for " F. GEUTEBRUCK" is on page 47 of a book entitled "LINCOLN - A PHOTOBIOGRAPHY" by Russell Freedman, published by Scholastic, Inc. in 1987. The sign is next door to a building with a sign "AUCTION & NEGRO SALES". The caption on the picture is " Slave market in Atlanta. The slaves were held in pens until they were auctioned off".

The photograph to which you al redfer, was taken by
the famous Lewis W. Hine. It can be found in a great many books as it was and still is being used.
I suggest you look in Atlanta census 1860....

One more thing. If he was a businessman living in Atlanta, he may have been buried in the only city cemetery at the time. You may want to ask these people if he is buried there.burialrecords@oaklandcemetery.com
Good luck.

Thank you for the information. I guess it is possible that my Frank Geutebruck was in Atlanta before New Orleans. It would be nice to know what year the picture of reference was taken. In my first posting, I stated that he came to the US about 1965. Obviously that was in error. It was around 1865. The photo date might give evidence as to a port of entry. I am relatively sure he was not in the US for the 1860 census and did not locate a name when I searched. I know for sure the movement of this one man from 1865 through the time of his death. He died in Houston, Texas and is also burried there. Thanks for the information.

You can also find this photo (or a similar one) on my website, www.slaverysite.com. It was part of a collection of photos of Sherman in Atlanta, Sept-Nov 1864, during the Civil War. George N. Barnard was the official photographer and took this photo. The F. Geutebruck Tobacco shop is on Whitehall Street. Other nearby businesses are shown and identified.

Hope you get this, but many RR accounts seem to have closed down in our area. What do you know, F, Geutebruck was in Atlanta in 1861-1864. I don't know how he got there or why he left, probably was due to the devestation after Sherman's burning of Atlanta. I have found three published pieces of sheet music by him and I am truly surprised that he sold Cuban cigars. Fortunately, his store, that you noted was in the picture, existed long before the slavery auction in the store next door. Without all of the suggestions to search here, I never would have believed him to have been in this location. Now I'd love to know how and why he was in Atlanta at that time.
