Re: Jeter/Geter originating Union County, SC
My family who spelled the name Jeter and Geter on birth certificates of children were from Union and York. This is an Afro-American family. I have not known of a Jeter/Geter Plantation in that area. Searching for where my family may have come from. Names that I have are Alex Jeter/Geter married to a Elisa or Elizabeth Sims. This couple had 10 children, the names that I know are Bill, died young, George, Maggie, Alberta, Lizzie, Lois or Lossie my mother, Anna, Ginnie Mae, Ida Mae,and Mary. The girls married into the Thompson, McCluney, Feemster, Michem, Carter and Chambers families. All of these family members grew up in this area, however most left in the 1920's. The Thompson family also came from that area. Anthony Thompson married a Pearl Bias, one of their sons was Lewis Lee born in 1906, my father. Other children of the Thompson family were Sam, Ether, Ella Mae+Long, Eunice +Rhyne, and Alice+ Welch. All but Eunice came to DC.

My father's last name is Geter. I am not close to him and find it difficult to get answers about our history. I know they are all from down south.

Re: Jeter/Geter originating Union County, SC
One thing I can tell you, if your dad is from South Carolina especially Union, as times passed the word "J" was changed to a "G" (Jeter). Does your dad have any siblings? Do you know who is parents are? Where did he go to high school? Even though you are not close ask him what was his parents or grandparents name. Do you have children? If so, try to tell Dad you want to write the grand and great grandparents down. If you need help I will help you. One thing to remember: Many people in Union that is a Jeter is not related. Jeter is a plantation property name. Therefore, since some of us don't know where n Africa they came from it makes it harder. So, one Jeter does not have to be related to the other. Once some Jeter slaves left Union, we went to NY, PA, Alabama, some VA.
