I live in Vicksburg Ms. I have a book that traces our family from South Carolina to Mississippi in the 1800's. The Jeter name changed to Geter after that move, probably because it was mispelled when it was transcribed in the records of Wilkinson county to where they moved. I dont know if any of this applies to the Geter's that you are refering to. Contact me if i can be of any more help

I have noticed that the spelling alternates between Geter and Jeter. In the SSDI, I have found some relatives under "J" and some under "G", so if you have any information regarding G/Jeters from South Carolina, Union County, please e-mail me. Thanks. My great grandfather, James Jeter, was from Union, South Carolina. I have also have a great uncle named James Jeter. Thanks.

I looked thru my book again and the only thing i found was a page saying that the census record of 1790 (the first United States Census)shows that members of the William Jeter family was the only Jeter's in the state of South Carolina at that time. He lived in Edgefield county and Ninety Six District. If I can be any more help let me know. My book tells about alot of Geter/Jeter's but that is the only mention of South Carolina. Bobby

My family is from Union County, SC. We are African-American. They were really spread around--some lived in Saluda, NC; some in Spartanburg; some in Glendale. But my GGF was from Union County, SC. They names were also spelled with a "G" and a "J". But my GM and her siblings spelled their names with a "G". I don't think that only one person named Geter/Jeter could have lived in South Carolina at any time since that name is a very common one in the South. Thanks.

Where did you get book. My family name was changed when grandfather William F. Geter applied for SS# misspelled Jeter His other immediate family remained Geter. Great-greats may have been from GA. (Pineapple Grove?)

The name of the book is "WILLIAM SCOTT OF FAIRFIELD COUNTY SOUTH CAROLINA AND HIS DESCENDENTS" written by "O'Levia Neil Wilson Weise" It was copywright 1987 but I can't find out who published it. My copy is number 150. Maybe you can do a web search and locate it. I think you have to contact the author to buy it.

Bobby, I am looking for information on a James William Jeter. He was married at least three times. Name of first wife unknown to me. They had a daughter, name unknown. He then married Caroline Gordon, they had Eliza, Ada, and Jack. Eliza was born in 1878 in MS. After the death of Caroline he married Mary Margaret Chapman in AR and they had a daughter named Rinda. Eliza is my Grandmother, and I would appreciate any information you could sent to me. On the census I have, Eliza shows her parents born in MS. So far I am at a dead end searching the Jeters. Also James went by J W. Thanks, Janie
