My maiden name is Getkin. My father told me that some of our ancestors spelled their last name "Getchey". My great, great grandfather was a civil war veteran by the name of Jeremiah. He resided in Catawissa, Columbia County, PA. If anyone has any info regarding the connection between Getchey and Getkin ancestors I would love to hear from them.

Jeremiah GETKIN and my great-great-grandfather, Thomas GETKIN, were brothers. With several other brothers, they worked as boatmen from Catawissa PA. At least some of Thomas's children used the GETCHEY spelling by the late 1860's. I understand the original German name had an umlaut, and so could not be spelled accurately in American English. GOETTGE was a version used by many of the earliest American family members. GETGEN is another variant, along with KETCHEY and others.

Interesting aside...

Catherine CRIDER (KRIDER) (b.13 Oct 1783, d. 9 Sep 1842), daughter of Barnabus Krider and his wife Peggy, was my ggg-grandmother. She married John KETCHEY (of the Rowan County, NC Ketchies) on 21 April 1805.

Just a bit of trivia from another GÖTTGEN descendant.

I am looking for information in regard to my Great Grandmother, Leah Getkin. She died in Sunbury, Pa. at the age of 28 in 1916. She left behind two small children, Bill and Maude. When she was 22 she lived in Sunbury with a family named Henninger. Do you know of her?

I know you posted your message a while ago and I am wondering how far you have come in your research. I also have a relative with the Getkin last name in my family tree. My relative is related to your Jeremiah. I am looking for information in regard to a Leah Getkin Fry who was my Grandmother's Mother. Do you know anything of her?

I have not heard of a Leah Getkin, but my dad has lived in Sunbury all of his life and he may know. He may have known Bill or Maude since my dad was born in 1924.
