Gail-- I hope you don't mind my reply but in all the years of doing family history I have not seen any one post that exact spelling. I won't be able to help you with your current search but I have the Getchey surname also. I can tell you that so far that name goes back to North Carolina in the 1700's.Have you sent away for any death certificates? That may give you a place to start. Good luck and maybe we may hook up way back. Linda

Linda, for years my family has tho't that my g grandmothers names was Getchey. She was born in Defiance County Ohio. Her name was Amanda Ellen Gietgey Koch, but the pronunciation sounded like Getchey. The Gietgeys are German and came from PA to OH, You might try that name, too.

Diane, Thanks I will use that spelling in my research from now on. I believe that they came down from PA to NC. Maybe some how in research I will bump into you again! Thanks, Linda

Goetschy Family in Pennsylvania
According to "The Goetschy Family and The Limping Messenger," by Ruth and William Heidgerd, the Goetschy Family, traveling on the ship "Mercury," landed at Philadephia in May 1735. Since then, the spelling of Goetschy has been changed numerous times. It is possible that your line comes from the same family. "The Goetschy Family and The Limping Messenger" can be purchased from the Huguenot Historical Society, New Paltz, NY, Phone (914) 255-1889.

My great-grandfather came to America in 1883. He was born in Austria. To our knowledge, when he came to this country he came by himself at the age of 16. Therefore, I too am trying to find a link -- why would my great-grandfather settle in Tuscarawas County, Ohio? I do not think that we are related, but there is a Getchey family that lives in Pennsylvania that might be related to you. I do not know their e-mail addresses. You can find them by going through ancestry.com. Good luck in your search. And if you think I can be of further assistance, please let me know.

I too have the Getchey surname. My great-grandfather came to this country from Austria in 1883 at the age of 16. On his marriage record the spelling of his last name is Goettge. Then it changed to Getchey. He settled in Tuscarawas County, Ohio. If there was a relative already in this country, I am trying to find out who it would be. The family knows of no one. By any chance, do you know anything that would help solve this mystery for me? Thanks.
