Sorting out the various Nicholas GERLACHs, GARLOCKs, CARLOUGHs, and CARLOCKs

Need assistance in sorting out the various Nicholas GERLACHs, GARLOCKs, CARLOCKs, and CARLOUGHs of New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania. Note that it is possible that not all of these individuals are related to each other. It is also probable that this is not a complete list of individuals who fit this description. I have also not yet done extensive research on the GERLACH and GARLOCK lines, but welcome input from others who have researched those lines.

Niclaes/Nicholas KERLACH/GERLACH (s/o Coenraad “Conrad” GERLACH/GERLAG/CARLOCK and Anna Maria KUMMERIN, and grandson of Johan Peter “Hans” GERLACH and Anna Maria KUMMERIN), b. 1710; m. Elizabeth DE GRAUW, Sept. 8, 1729. Residence Ramapo, Rockland Co., NY. Niclaes/Nicholas and Elizabeth were possibly parents of a son named Niclas CARLOCK who served in the Revolutionary War. However, page 429 of the book “History of the Carlock Family,” by Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK, 1929, says, “"May be son of Pieter instead of Niclaes."

Nickolas Frantz GERLOCH who arrived Philadelphia, Ship "Isaac" from Rotterdam, Sept., 1749.

Nicholaus GERLACH who arrived Philadelphia, Ship "Edinburgh," from Rotterdam, Aug. 13, 1750.

Nicholaus GERLACH Jr., b. ca. 1727, who arrived Philadelphia, Ship "Edinburgh," from Rotterdam, Oct. 2, 1753.

Nicholas GERLACH (s/o Elias GERLACH/CARLOCK/GARLOCK and Anna Margaretha (possibly ERHARDT); and grandson of the immigrant Johan Christian GERLACH/GARLOCK/CARLOCK; Johan Peter “Hans” GERLACH), b. 1732,

Nicolass GARLOCK (s/o the immigrant Johan Christian GERLACH/GARLOCK/CARLOCK and “Indian maiden doctor”; and grandson of Johan Peter “Hans” GERLACH and Anna Maria KUMMERIN), b. 1734; m. DIRCKIE.

Niclas CARLOCK (As noted above, pg. 429 of the book “History of the Carlock Family,” lists Niclas as son of Niclaes and grandson of Conrad, but includes the note “May be son of Pieter instead of Niclaes.” The book also says “No doubt served in War of 1776.” According to the book, Niclas was the father of daughters Anna (b. July 28, 1791) and Elizabeth (b. Oct. 28, 1770).

Nicklos CARLOCK, U.S. Revolutionary War, New York, enlisted, Orange County Militia (Land Bounty Rights) -- Second Regiment. (Is this the same person as the above-listed Niclas CARLOCK?)

Hannikel "John Nicholas" CARLOCK who paid taxes, Lampeter Township, Lancaster Co., PA, 1773.

Nicholus "Nick" CARLOUGH/CARLOCK, b. ca. 1792, NJ; m. Maria (b. 1799 – 1809, NJ). Residences Washington Township, Bergen Co., NJ, 1850; P.O. Hohokus, Washington Township, Bergen Co., NJ, 1860. What is the relationship between Nick CARLOUGH and David James CARLOUGH, b. 1813, NJ? David's daughter Elisabeth J. "Eliza" CARLOUGH, age 24, appears to have been living in Nick's household at the time of the 1860 census.

Nikolas CERRELLAGH (s/o Johannis "John" CERELLACH and Lentje/Leentje), b. Sept. 15, 1793; bpt. Oct. 20, 1793, Paramus, Bergen Co., NJ. Witnesses to his baptism were Coenrad BACKER and Betje CERRALACH. Nikolas also had sibling Jure (CERELLAGH) CERRELLAGH, b. Aug. 22, 1796; bpt. Sept. 25, 1796. Witnesses to Jure’s baptism were Jure and Sara CERRALLAGH.

Nickolas CARLOUGH (s/o Ludovick CARLOUGH and Wyntjie VAN WERT), b. Feb. 1, 1800, NY; m. Margaret DATER; d. Sept. 13, 1849.

Nicholas G. CARLOUGH (s/o George CARLOUGH and Sara STRAUT, and grandson of Heinrich/Hendrick “Henry” GOERLOCH/CAERLOG/CARLOCK, Juriaen "George" GERLACH/GERLAGH/CARLOCK, the immigrant Coenraad "Conrad" GERLACH/GERLAG/CARLOCK, Johan Peter “Hans” GERLACH), b.Sept. 1801; d. Sept. 19, 1849, Mahwah, Bergen Co., NJ; bd. Ramapo Reformed Church Cemetery, Mahwah, Bergen Co., NJ.

Nicholas CURLOCK m. Mary. Nicholas and Mary were parents of James CURLOCK, b. ca. 1834, who m. Maria L. BOUNDS (b. ca. 1838), Mar. 31, 1861, Paterson, Passaic Co., NJ.

Nicolas CARLOUGH (s/o Sara who was b. ca. 1781, NY), b. ca. 1827, NY. Residence Ramapo, Rockland Co., NY, 1850.

Nicholas “Nick” CARLOUGH (s/o John George CARLOCK and Mary BABCOCK, and grandson of George CARLOUGH, Heinrich/Hendrick “Henry” GOERLOCH/CAERLOG/CARLOCK, Juriaen "George" GERLACH/GERLAGH/CARLOCK, the immigrant Coenraad "Conrad" GERLACH/GERLAG/CARLOCK, Johan Peter “Hans” GERLACH), b.
I realise your posting quite old, but how did you get on? I am researching the Dobersaul Gerlachs as well, and have the Dobersaul church book extracts which show Gerlach, Johann Christian and also Anna Dorathea Gerlach born 1929. I'd be very grateful for any links you have made between the Dobersaul Gerlachs as one of them, Friedrich Ernst, settled near my great great grandfather Johann Wilhelm Gerlach born 1816 who came to South Australia in 1859, and am trying to confirm if they were brothers

A great-great-grandmother of mine was Wilhelmine Tölle nee Gerlach, born 22 May 1830 in Steigerthal. Her parents were Andreas Christoph Gerlach and Anna Marie Gerlach nee Gerlach (!). I have no further information about her parents, but I understand there were a number of Gerlachs in the village at the time. She emigrated with husband and children in June 1868 and settled in Milwaukee Co., Wisconsin. When did your Gerlachs emigrate?

Re: Hans Peter GERLOCH/GERLACH, b. 1632, Kusel, Pfalz, Germany

Following is a summary of information gathered so far with regard to the descendants of Hans Peter GERLOCH/GERLACH, b. 1632, Kusel, Pfalz, Germany. Three of Hans Peter GERLOCH/GERLACH’s sons, Coenraad GERLACH, Johann Christian GERLACH, and David GERLACH, are known to have migrated from Germany to Holland several years before migrating to America. The book “History of the Carlock Family,” which was written by Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK in 1929 does not include information about Hans Peter GERLOCH/GERLACH, but instead starts with the three immigrant brothers. Information about Hans Peter GERLOCH/GERLACH can be found in German records which have been copied by members of the LDS Church. Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK’s book deals primarily with those descendants of the three immigrant brothers who used the Anglicized “CARLOCK” spelling of the surname “GERLACH.” I maintain a list of sources for viewing or obtaining copies of Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK’s book. See the following thread for a copy of that list:
http://genforum.genealogy.com/carlock/messages/552.html

Johann Christian GERLACH arrived in New York, June 10, 1710, from London, on the ship “James & Elizabeth,” with his wife and children. Johann Christian and his family migrated to the Schoharie and Mohawk Valleys of New York. Most of his known descendants used the spelling “GARLOCK” and remained in the northeastern portion of the United States. Some of his CARLOCK descendants migrated to New York City. I have not yet done extensive research on the GARLOCK surname.

The immigrant brother Coenraad “Conrad” GERLACH settled in Hackensack, Bergen Co., New Jersey. His descendants are known to have used the spellings “CARLOCK” and “CARLOUGH.” Most of his CARLOUGH descendants can be found in New Jersey and nearby counties in New York. Some of his CARLOCK descendants migrated to New York City, Ohio and Indiana. The professional drummer Keith CARLOCK, born in Washington Co., Mississippi, is descended from the Licking Co., Ohio, branch of this family.

The immigrant brother David GERLACH, my ancestor, migrated to Pennsylvania, then migrated with the historical figure Yost HEYDT from Pennsylvania to Virginia in 1732, settling in Augusta Co., Virginia, by 1741. (Information about Yost HEYDT can be found elsewhere on the Internet.) Most of the CARLOCKs found in the United States and Mexico are descended from David. Many of David’s descendants migrated to Illinois.

David’s son Hanchrist CARLOCK was a Revolutionary War soldier from Virginia who fought under the command of General George WASHINGTON. Prior to the Revolutionary War Hanchrist is also believed to have worked with George WASHINGTON in connection with building roads in Virginia. Their names are chiseled near each other on one of the walls of the Natural Bridge rock formation in Virginia. Most of Hanchrist’s descendants used the spelling “CARLOCK,” but one branch in Oklahoma used the spellings “CEARLOCK” (pronounced like “CARELOCK”), and “CURLOCK.” Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK, author of the book “History of the Carlock Family,” was descended from Hanchrist. U.S. Army Specialist Ryan Gene CARLOCK, from Macomb, Illinois, who died in 2003 from wounds received while serving on active duty in Iraq, was also descended from Hanchrist. See my previous posting at the following site for additional information about the Natural Bridge rock formation chiselings:
http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/CARLOCK/2003-0...

David’s son Frederick migrated to the portion of Mecklenburg Co., North Carolina, which became Cabarrus County in 1792. Some of his descendants used the spelling “CARLOCK.” One branch, found primarily in the southern portion of the United States, used the spelling “CARELOCK.” Yet another branch migrated to Illinois and used the spellings “CEARLOCK” and “CURLOCK.” I am a member of this Illinois branch of the CEARLOCK family. The book “History of the Carelocks,” by Mrs. Smith (Mary Lou) MEDLIN, 1973, includes information about some members of the CARELOCK branch of the family. I have found some errors relating to Frederick’s descendants in Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK’s book “History of the Carlock Family. See the reports on my home page for more accurate information on these lines. I have started a list of sources for viewing or obtaining copies of Mrs. Smith MEDLIN’s book. See the following thread for a copy of that list:
http://genforum.genealogy.com/carelock/messages/15.html

There are also some black CARLOCK and CARELOCK families in the United States who are not believed to be biologically related to the white branches of the family. I do have some information about these black families in my database which I would be willing to share upon request.

Furthermore, I have found three branches of CURLOCKs in Canada. The Alberta, Canada, branch originally spelled their surname “KURYLUK,” and are not believed to be related to the CURLOCK families in the United States and Mexico. The New Brunswick, Canada, branch is descended from John CURLOCK who was born ca. 1849 in England. John is also not believed to be related to the CURLOCK families in the United States and Mexico. I have not yet determined the origin of the Estevan, Saskatchewan, Canada, branch of the CURLOCK family. They are descended from John CURLOCK, born Dec. 28, 1916. Estevan is located near the North Dakota border.

I have also not yet been able to link the television writer and producer Robert Morgan CARLOCK’s Massachusetts branch of the CARLOCK family to the rest of the CARLOCK family tree, but I do have some information about his parents and grandparents.

Individuals spelling their surname “KARLOCK” can also be found in the United States. I have not yet found any of these KARLOCK branches to be related to the rest of the CARLOCK family tree. Censuses show some of them to have migrated to the United States from places such as Russia, Poland, Germany, Austria, and Hungary.

I have also not yet found any members of this family to have continued using the “GERLACH” spelling for their surname after the first couple of generations in America, but I have not yet ruled out the possibility that such lines might exist.

I have also not yet ruled out the possibility that this family may be related to the CARLOWs who live near the CARLOUGH (pronounced like CARLOW) branch of this family in New Jersey.

Furthermore, I also have not yet ruled out the possibility that Steven GARLICK, b. 1750 – 1756, Bedford, Bedford Co., PA, may be related to this family, as has been proposed by some researchers. However, one researcher believes Steven to instead be descended from the GARLITZ family of western Maryland.

At least one male CARLOCK descendant and one male CEARLOCK descendant have participated in DNA studies which may eventually provide answers to some of these questions. See the following thread for further information on this subject:
http://genforum.genealogy.com/carlock/messages/499.html

Also note that members of the Illinois branch of the CEARLOCK/CURLOCK family are distant cousins to President Harry S. TRUMAN through Rachel LANDERS CEARLOCK’s (1783 – 1847) GUTKNECHT/GOODNIGHT and LANDIS/LANDERS ancestry. They are also distant cousins to the Texas cattleman and trailblazer Charles GOODNIGHT through Rachel’s GUTKNECHT/GOODNIGHT ancestry. They are also possibly distant cousins to President Barack OBAMA and the sculptor Veryl GOODNIGHT through Rachel’s GUTKNECHT/GOODNIGHT ancestors. See the following sites for additional information on these subjects:
http://genforum.genealogy.com/goodnight/messages/210.html
http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/GOODNIGHT/2001...
http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/GOODNIGHT/2009...
http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/GOODNIGHT/2003...
http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/CEARLOCK/2007-...

I welcome additions and corrections to the information in the reports which appear on my home page.

Susan Cearlock Tilleman (setileman@gmail.com)
http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/t/i/l/Susan-E-Til...
I would also like to find a descendant of Lucy if she is no longer with us. I am trying to find a better hard copy of the story and permission to scan into a digital copy or if that has already been done, to get a digital copy.
While visiting the San Antonio Genealogical & Historical Society’s library today I discovered that they have a copy of the book “History of the Carlock Family,” by Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK, 1929. I have updated my list of sources for this book. The updated list can be found at the following site:
http://genforum.genealogy.com/carlock/messages/552.html

Most CARLOCKs are descendants of Hans Peter GERLOCH/GERLACH, b. 1632, Kusel, Pfalz, Germany. Three of his sons migrated to America in the early 1700s. For further information about this family, see the GERLACH report on my home page.

Susan Cearlock Tilleman (setilleman@gmail.com)
http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/t/i/l/Susan-E-Til...

Due to the increasing size of my database of the descendants of Hans Peter GERLOCH/GERLACH, b. 1632, Kusel, Pfalz, Germany, as well as Family Tree Maker software changes, it has unfortunately become necessary for me to change the formats and content of the related reports on my home page. Please contact me if you need information about additional generations or individuals you do not find in these reports. I also have a lot of miscellaneous data for individuals who I have not yet been able to connect to the overall GERLACH/ GERLOCH/ GARLOCK/ CARLOCK/ CARLOUGH/ CARELOCK/ CEARLOCK/ CURLOCK family tree.

As always, I welcome any additions or corrections to the information contained in these reports.

Susan Cearlock Tilleman (setilleman@gmail.com)
http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/t/i/l/Susan-E-Til...

Hello,
Thanks for the information. I just looked up in what I had found in Lorain County Ohio when I applied for First Families of Lorain County. What I found was my ancestor George Gerlack, wife Anna, and son Johann arrived on the Jane E. Williams from Bremen in New York on August 21, 1848. According to the ship record George was 47 in 1848, Anna was 45 in 1848, and Johann was 14 in 1848. Also I have a copy of Intention for Naturalization that says that John Gerlach applied on May 1850 in Lorain County it said that he arrived in August of 1848 at the age of 16 years old. It does say he was a resident of Hesse Cassel. John married Catherine or Christine Zuelth they had one son George that was my great grandfather.
Do you know if any of the Gerlachs that settled in Scioto County migrated north to Lorain County. I would be very interested in receiving more information and any information you have on Asumushausen, Hessen-Kassel.
You can go to the Lorain County web site the Gerlachs are laid to rest in the Cleveland Street cemetery.
Thanks Again
Richard

Richard,

I believe I have the answers you are looking for. Johann & Anna E (wife) Gerlach and Wilhelm & Anna M (wife) Gerlach came from Asumushausen, Hessen-Kassel on 11-12-48 with other family and settled in Scioto County. Anna a/k/a Martha married Anton Stoecker/Staker(who preceded her in the 11-12-48 trip with his in-law's) and arrived with the children on 12-1-52. I have more info if that will help.
