Hello,

I have Geraghty's that settled in Perth Amboy & Woodbridge New Jersey before 1870. The family story is that they came from County Mayo, but have not been able to prove.

Interestingly Thomas Geraghty (1870-1914) married Rose Killmurray whose father Patrick was born in Rochfortebridge, County Westmeath. Thomas parents were Patrick Killmurray (1835-1910) and Elizabeth Gorman

Thank you for your reply. I do not see any relationship here with my Mayo family. If I discover anything new I will let you know. Our Geraghty is from Backs, Mayo, a very small community back when. Good Luck with your pursuits. Mig

My ancestors were Thomas Gerrity and Catherine Reddington of Browntown, Pittston. Thomas was born in County Mayo, son of John Geraghty and Mary McHale. Are we connected?

Thanks for contacting me. My father was one of twelve children of John G. and Mary McHale. They did not have a son named Thomas I am certain. But what I can tell you is that Thomas father was Michael, twin of John. He married Sarah Reddington in 1870 and lived in Scranton. His arrival in the states was 1870, and he died in 1914 in Scranton. I believe his siblings to be Sadie and James. There could be more, that is all I found.
I hope this is some help, and if you wish to view more of my tree, go to Garrity-Sturr family tree. Let me know if you have further questions, or even additions to what I know. I have visited the birth home in Derryguliame, and photos are on my tree. Respectfully, Mig Garrity Sturr. Where do you live now?. I am in MD.

Surnames: Gerety, Girrity, Keogan, Dunn
My great great grandfather was Francis Gerety from County Westmeath. Here is what I have learned about him:

FRANCIS GERETY (1823-1863) was born on 5 February 1823 to Ann (KEOGAN) and John GIRRITY (sic) in Killucan, County Westmeath, Ireland [per Dun na Si Heritage Centre ancestral research report]. His baptism was sponsored by Philip Reilly and Mary Smyth. He appears to be the oldest of five: siblings include Catherine, b. 16 Oct 1826; Peter, b. 9 Jan 1829; Philip, b 22 Feb 1834; and John, b. 7 Aug 1836.

Sometime before 1849 Francis emigrated to New York [Manhattan City Directory 1849-50]. His mother, Ann Gerety also emigrated to New York [last will and testament of Francis Gerety, codicil dated Sept. 13, 1863] as did at least one sibling, his brother Philip Gerety [Kings County Letters of Administration (for in testate Ann Gerety) dated June 2, 1865, liber 15, page 104].

Francis married Ann A. Dunn in New York City on 7 May 1850 at St. Stephen’s Church in a ceremony officiated by the Rev. J.W. Cummings and witnessed by Geoghegan W. Underwood and Eliza Flanagan [St. Stephens Church marriage records: S.M. B.1/5]. The Geretys lived in Brooklyn from the early 1850s until their deaths in 1863. They had four children, Elizabeth Ann, John B., and Joseph L.

If you have any connection to any of these people, please contact me.

Hi (Is it James?)
My husband's ggrandfather was James, son of Patrick, born c 1833, in Duleek. With a sister, Mary. Came to Australia in the 1850s. Spelling of the name here Gerraty. I have a good photo of James but taken as an older man - in case you also had a photo for comparison.

I think there may well be connections with your lot. If you give me your email address I can let you have what I have on the Duleek Geraghtys. I'm not sure that there will be anything that will really illuminate but you never know. Do you have the name of all the children of you grandfather and those of his two sisters? We could do a comparison...
