GEPP family in Braintree & Bocking, Essex
I am descended from a Mary Ann GEPP (my g.g.grandmother), born circa 1833 at Petersfield, Hampshire. Her marriage certificate (St. Georges Hanover Square, 1854) confirms that her father is a Mark GEPP, a coachman and at this time my GEPP family is living at Portland Place in Marylebone. I have checked baptisms for the Petersfield area and found a Mark GEPP, baptised in 1834 to parents Mark & Elizabeth GEPP (Mark's occupation is given as coachman). I cannot find any other GEPPs in the Peterfield area at this time and have concluded that this is the same family.
The IGI lists a marriage between a Mark GEPP & Elizabeth CLARK at All Saints in Marylebone on 18/06/1830.
I had been unable to find where Mark GEPP was born - but yesterday I happened upon a 1881 census record for two GEPPs in Stowlangtoft, Suffolk. These are recorded as: -
Emma GEPP, Head, U, 81, Braintree, ESSEX, Governess Lizzie GEPP, Niece, U, 41, Petersfield, Hants, Governess
It seems highly likely to me that Lizzie (given her birthplace and scarcity of GEPPs in that area) is sister to my Mary Ann - which would make Emma GEPP sister to Mary Ann's father Mark.
This leads me to conclude that Mark GEPP might also have been born in Braintree.
I should be very interested to know in any of these GEPP's are familiar to any other researchers of the GEPP name in Essex

Re: GEPP family in Braintree & Bocking, Essex
Hi Mark, They almost certainly are related to my branch somehow, but that connection further back has yet to be unearthed. My Gepps are from Chelmsford and the surrounding villages, though one ore two did drift to the Braintree area. Best wishes, Alex Hall

Re: GEPP family in Braintree & Bocking, Essex
I am researching the Gepp Family oin Australia. THOMAS GEPP (M.R.C.V.S.) was born in 1819 at the Village of HOCKLEY near South-End -On Sea, ESSEX, ENGLAND ( not far from CHEMLSFORD). Thomas the son of a Essex farmer sailed for Australia with Colonel Light aboard " The Rapid", arriving at Holdfast Bay in September 1836.
He made two return trips to England to select horse breeding stocks for the settlers at Jamestown. In 1838--40 returning with a wife Ann Francis and a brother Issac and his wife. (Some doubt exists if Issac and Thomas were brother or cousins)
If you have anyinformation that may link into this plaese contact me.

Re: GEPP family in Braintree & Bocking, Essex
I have a shipping list that records Thomas GEPP arriving on the "Rapid" in SA 20 Aug 1836 from London.
I have a further shipping list for passengers arriving on the "Fairlie/Farlee" arriving 7 July 1840 from London.
GEPP Isaac, Wife Ann (Son) GEPP Thomas, Ann nee FRANCIS, Henry FRANCIS (Thomas Ist arr 1836 Rapid)
I am also a little confused with the reports of Thomas GEPP being born 1809/1810/1819 son of Thomas GEPP, Farmer Essex etc.
Thomas GEPP's Marriage Certificate to Ann FRANCIS dated 17 March 1840 Parish St George Hanover Square in the County of Middlesex CLEARLY states :-
Father WILLIAM GEPP (Occ Vet Surgeon)
Thomas himself is listed as a FARRIER and Ann's father (John FRANCIS) is listed as a TAILOR.
British Isles Vital Records Index report the following Marriage : -
William GEPP Married Mary WARREN 30 Sep 1795 in Maldon Essex England (source All Saints & St Peter ; Marriage transcripts 1754 - 1837.
The IGI reports 5 (five) children of this marriage including
THOMAS GEPP Christening 16 Dec 1801 Saint Peters - Independent, Maldon Essex England
I am not a direct decendant of this line, I have been merely researching the line on behalf of my grandson (Lachlan GEPP) who is a direct decendant of Thomas GEPP.
Is anyone else looking at this line via Thomas's father William GEPP.

Re: GEPP family in Braintree & Bocking, Essex
Dear Bob
I am interested in William Gepp who married Mary Warren. I am a descendent of Joseph Gepp born 1835. I have not been doing this for very long and am quite overwhelmed with it. Can you help me with Joseph at all as I beleive it was either Joseph or his brother Henry who jumped ship in adelaide.
Many thanks
Jill

Re: GEPP family in Braintree & Bocking, Essex
Hello Robert and Colin I am researching the first two generations only of the descendants of the passengers of the first eight ships which arrived at Kangaroo Island in 1836. As Thomas Gepp was on the Rapid, I am interested in your comments that you have been researching the Gepp family. I wold be delighted if you could contact me. I am particularly interested as to whether Isaac and Thomas were brothers. Also whether Joseph was Isaac's son who arrived with his parents on the Fairlie. In the meantime you may care to visit http://dukeofyork.tribalpages.com/family-tree/dukeofyork/178... and would be pleased if you can prove me wrong on any data. Regards David Wilson
