Gepheart family

Surnames: Gepheart, Gibbard
I am trying to trace my grandmothers family. I have a reasonable amount of information, but there is a persistant rumour that my great or great great grandfather was German. I can only find London born Gephearts who are related. Has anyone any information they might be able to share with me to solve this mystery.

Thank you.

Hello,

I also heard the rumours from my Grandmother and her sisters that their grandfather was German. Having traced the Gephearts quite a long way back to Peter Gepheart, they were all born in London working as watermen lightermen on the River Thames. It seems likely that s Gepheart started the rumour because of the name. Of course there were no such thing as computers and rumours carried on down through the generations. As there doesn't appear to be any evidence the Gephearts have no German ancestry.

I hope this helps.

Julie

Hello Lynn
I think we have previously communicated through Genes Reunited. My mother was a Gepheart and I could only retrace family to Peter Gepheart. My Gt.grandfather was John Joseph who was a Thames Waterman but I wasn't aware he made it to Master. I don't think they are of German extraction but on a trip to Bruges I did see a shop bearing the name Gepheart Brothers! So its possible they may have originally come from Europe. Or I may have only muddied the waters.
