My GG grandparents were Patrick and Barbara Maley Geoghegan, married in 1861, in Galway. My G grandmother was Sarah Geoghegan,born in Galway, June18,1871. Other siblings to my G Grandmother were Martin, born Sept. 6,1867,....(My uncle said they called him Michael), Patrick born Feb. 10, 1869, Thomas,who I can't find anywhere, but was said after coming to the US he went to Canada and became a Canadian Ranger. James was born Aug. 15,1874, ( my uncle has a copy of Jame's birth cert. that states his father Patrick was a teacher and Barbara was a homemaker). Mary was born July 6,1877. Some of the births said Spiddal, Galway on them, others just said Galway. All the children came to the US except I believe Mary. I would love to get more info on the family and hopefully find the names of Patrick and Barbara's parents. My Grandmother and Aunt used to write to Mary Geoghegan, and a Sally McGreen in New Castle,Erie, Galway. Other names in the correspondence, where Paddy and Annie Clishman. I believe they had children named Sally, Sarah,and Mary. It is very possible I have whos who mixed up, but there it is. I would be absolutely delighted to here from someone , anyone with info. Thank You Lori, itzme1957

Hi,

According to records in the Church of Ireland library - library@ireland.anglican.org - the father
of Patrick Geoghegan was a "Thomas Geoghegan" a Scripture Reader and the father of Barbara Malley(Maley) "Thomas Malley" a labourer.
The address is Inverin which is also spelled "Inveran" and is two miles West of the village of Spiddal. The civil parish is Killannin and is referred to as the parish of Killannin (Spiddal).
Following the setting up of a Protestant Mission in the 1840's by the Rev. Alexander Dallas in Connemara many of the local population joined the Anglican church.

A church and school were built c.1850. The Rev. James McCreedy was pastor there in the 1850's.
The following may be of interest to you: 1857 - Ellen Geogheghan married a Patrick Keady;
Father - Thomas a Scripture Reader.

In relation to "Newcastle" the General hospital as it was known then, was in Newcastle Road,
Galway city. Sarah was possibly born there?
A Rev. Tim Clesham and a Martin Clesham are recorded in "Soupers & Jumpers" by Miriam Moffitt 2008. A history of the Mission - 1848 to 1937.

Regards,

Oh, You made my day, I have been searching for so long and wanted to be able to tell my mother and her siblings who are still alive more about the family before they are gone. My uncle has some of the important papers and notes, letters . When I looked at Spiddal on Google Maps it made me cry to think they had to leave such a beautiful place. Thanks you so very very much!
