Ignatius Geoghegan was a doctor and served on a ship as the ships doctor, during the revolutionary war. He died in Savannah in 1795 and left his worldly possessions to a son George. I cannot verify this as the information has come to me by word of mouth. I would like to hear from anyone who has information on Ignatius.

Robert, I am very interested in Ignatius Geoghegan. I can verify that he had medical training and worked in Savannah with a partner, selling medicines. i checked tax records there, and he was there in the time period you mentioned. An ad in the Savannah paper indicates a ":going-out-of-business" sale. I did not find the information that he was a ship's doctor, could not find his grave, and did not know that he had a son, or that he was married. I am writing a book on the Geoghegans of Westmeath, and wanted more information on the variety of professions they engaged in during the 18th cent. What is your interest in Ignatius?

My ggrandfather was George Geoghagan, born 1786 in SC, married to Mary ?.
George was the father of Joseph Joshua Geoghagan.Joshua produced 15 children, three wives, of which one was my father.
I am interested in Ignatius because I feel that he must be related to us in some way. I may be wrong but I think the tax records show his belongings given to a son, George, after his death in 1795.
Some time ago I received an email from a very nice lady giving me the following information on Ignatius:
Geoghegan, Ignatius
Birth 1743
Death 1797
Burial Chatham, Georgia
Rank/Service Surgeon
State of Service SC

I thought he died in 1795 but may be wrong. About having a son named George, word of mouth, but think he did.
Very hard to get accurate information this far back.
Thanks for writing and if you find any more info on Ignatius, please let me know.
Yours---Robert Geohagan

Based on your comments you've placed a Geoghegan in America earlier than what I thought. The best I've had was that three brothers arrived in Charleston in the late 1700's, one of which, Joshua, changed the spelling from Geoghegan to Geoghagan. Joshua was born in Ireland in 1760, came to SC in ??, married Sarah, born 1775. They first appeared in the 1790 census and were rice farmers.
My records show a George(1806), third son of Joshua, whose first son, Joseph Joshua I(1839) had 16 children, etc, etc. Your names seem to match but the dates are off. I'm wondering if Ignatius was one of the three brothers.

I saw the strand between you and Robert - Robert being the brother of my grandfather James M. Geohagan, Jr., also from Savannah, GA. My grandfather managed to keep extensive records on our family, and in fact, traces the line back to Co. Westmeath as well. Please send me an email and I will forward you any/all of the information I can get from his database. Regards - Teri
