Hello all,

I have ancestors named Jean Baptiste Geoffrion and Lucie Beauchemin, parents of an Arthemise Geoffrion who was born in 1853. I am stuck and would love some assistance with Jean-Baptiste and Lucie's parents.

Thanks in advance.

Ben

Hello Ben,

Marie-Artémise Geoffrion was my first cousin, three times removed,

I have her in my records as born in Beloil, Québec on May 6, 1852. She married F.X. Monty in New Bedford, Massachusetts on March 19, 1916.

Her father was Jean-Baptiste Geoffrion whose parents were Joseph Geoffrion and Marie Brodeur.

Mer mother was Marie-Lucie Petit or Beauchemin. The family used both surnames but I think Petit predominated. Her father was Joseph Petit. I don't have a name for her mother but I can find that out for you.

What else can you tell me about Artémise?

Frank

Thank you so much for the information. Artemise is my Great-great grandmother (My father's father's mother's mother).

What I know is a little confusing based upon what you provided me with. I have the following:

Arthemise Geoffrion
Died: August 6, 1916 in New Bedford, MA of Liver Cancer at 62 yrs, 3 Months, 1 day (from Obituary)
Married: Francois Monty
Child: Harmosa Monty, born 1887 in Rouville, PQ

It seems like we have the same person, but the dates do not make sense. Your dates have her getting married in her 70's, well after the birth of her daughter... She would also die five months after her marriage. What do you think?

Yours,

Ben

Thanks for the addition... do you have any other data about her and/or her husband? Location, birth, marriage, etc.?

Thanks so much.

Ben

p.s. I posted a reply to the other message with additional date about Artemise Geoffrion if you are interested.

Hello Ben,

You are absolutely right! I went back to my data and found that I had misread my information, I actually have Artémise marrying F. X. Monty, no date or place known, and then dying in New Bedford on Mar 19, 1916. I would expect that your date of death is more accurate if you have it from an obituary.

I went searching for her marriage in the index of Massachusetts Vital Records and found an Artémise Geoffrion marrying a Frank Monty in Holyoke, Mass. in 1887, vol. 379, page 440.. This looks right. I'll have to get over to the Mass.State Archives to get the rest of the information in the marriage record. I also found a Francois A. Monty born in New Bedford in 1886. I'll look at that, too, to see if it is the same family.

Are you descended from Harmosa Monty? Expectant mothers often returned to their family in Canada to give birth in those days.

I thought something was a little off :)

Thanks for digging a little more. I will have some time off soon and will try to get more information also. I'll keep you posted.

Yes, I am directly related to Harmosa Monty. Here is how we are linked:

Harmosa Monty
born: 1887, Rouville, PQ
died: July 15, 1964, New Bedford, MA
married: Arthur Ostiguy, August 5, 1907
Had 7 children: Rita, Wilfred, Alphonse, Anna, Lucie, *Norman

*Norman Ostiguy
born: May 12, 1917, New Bedford, MA
died: Sept 18, 1976, New Bedford, MA
married: Gilberte Marie Guenette
Had 4 Children: Pauline, *Nelson, Therese, Normand

*Nelson Ostiguy
born: 1946, Acushnet, MA
married: Claudia Cormier
Had 2 Children: *Benjamin, Zachary

*Benjamin Ostiguy
born: 1972, New Bedford, MA
married: Carol Finneran
Have 1 child: *Emma

*Emma Catherine Ostiguy
born: July 16, 2004, Northampton, MA

I am told that Harmosa could play the piano very well and that she was a kind yet tough woman. I remember someone (an uncle) telling me that Harmosa pulled her own teeth rather than see a dentist. I have some pictures of her... she looks thin and serious.

Possibly more than you wanted to know, but there are lots of Geoffrion descendants (although not Geoffrion by name) in my extended family.

Before I sign off... I can't find Joseph Geoffrion or Joseph Petit in Tanguay or Drouin. Where can I pick-up their lines and trace them back to their sources? Do you have a source I should use, or any other advice?

Thanks a million. Yours,

Ben

Hello Ben,

Thanks for the information on Harmosa Monty. I would like to add this information to my Geoffrion database. I'm trying to collect as many Geoffrion descendants as I can.

I can send you plenty of information about Artémise's Geoffrion ancestors. I can't send that kind of attachment to these messages so you will have to give me your e-mail address if you're interested..

I think Tanguay ends before the dates we're talking about although it should be in Drouin. Did you try looking under "Beauchemin". too? I found what I believe is a brother of Lucie Beauchemin named Joseph. His parents are Joseph Beauchemin and Apolline Messier and he marries Éloise Colette Feb 8, 1848 in Varennes. The dates are right.

When I get a chance I'll look into the ancestors of Lucie Beauchemin for you. I have access to some good sources

Frank

I'm glad I have some information that is of use to you :)

I would appreciate anything you can share with me. I'll try Drouin per your suggestion. It is always exciting when you can trace a family line back to its source. You can email me directly at benjo72@hotmail.com.

Thanks again!
