Roy,

Your GGF Percival Gemberling of the 208th PA Infantry died 7/2/1913 at Bayonne, NJ. The place of burial on his death certificate in the archives in Trenton, NJ is practically illegible. The best I can do is guess that it reads "Slona" or "Slone", but I suspect it might be "Grove" as there is a Grove Church Cemetery near Bayonne.

Can you help me with this conundrum?

Bob

http://ourbrothersgonebefore.wetpaint.com

Bob

My Susanna Ehrhart born 8/27/1804 York, PA md Philip Gemberling & they moved to Union Co in the Sellins Grove area which became Snyder Co when it was formed. We know this much from York Co court records & follow them there in the 1850-70 censuses. I'd like to follow their ch listed in those censuses : Mary, Catherine, Henry, John, Frederick, Amanda, Barbara, Elias b 1829-1841 according to censuses. She was a sister of my Peter Ehrhart who was also there 1820 when his wife died after her 6th child. Peter ended up in MO.
Could this be your Gemberlings?
ME Bennett
compiler of
Descendants of 1741 Immigrant
J. Wilhelm Ehrhart
Hi - you still working on your Charles Gemberling? Since he was in Union Co same time our Philip & Susanna (Ehrhart) were, they are probably related. Susanna was from York Co - presumably md there.
ME Bennett

If they are from Snyder Co PA than there is probably a relationship to Philip Snyder who md our Susanna Ehrhart & they are in Snyder Co at least 1850-70. Were in York Co PA earlier.
ME Bennett

Philip Gemberling md our Susanna Ehrhart & they lived in Union Co PA - then as Snyder Co was formed their place was in Snyder Co. 1850-70 censuses list their children - not a Charles - but surely closely related. All if have are those listed in those censuses. Susanna was from York Co & they were likely married there. So your Charles may be from there, too.

Sometimes the name got listed as Kemberling, Kimberlin, etc.
Have you found any genea. contact person in Snyder Co? They don't seem to have a genea. society.
ME Bennett

Gemberling, Born Feb 10, 1815 in Snyder County, PA and died Feb 3, 1879 in York Twp., Sandusky, OH. His wife was Ester Laudenslager. I believe Charles had a brother Samuel and their father was Samuel, born in PA abt 1790.

Any leads would be appreciated.

Better late than never they say, but my dad, Owen virgil Swank, was Norma Gemberling's son. He was born in 1922 and raised by his grandparents Byron and Flora E Swank in Ohio. My dad died in Sherman, Texas on 9/8/92 at the age or 70. Norma died on or around 1976 in Kent, Ohio. My dad flew up to see her 6 months before her death. He had lost contact with her during World War 2 when he was drafted in the 82nd airborne during the Normandy invasion. I hope this is the info you needed and you will receive this reply after almost 6 years. thanks.. don swank

Joe-
I have a Memorial Document of the 208th PA Volunteers hanging on my office wall that lists William H. Gemberling as a 2d Lt. on his 2d enlistment in the 208th Volunteers. They were organized in Harrisburg, PA on Sept 12, 1864 and mustered in as a unit for one year. I don't know where his previous enlistment would have been. My great-grandfather Percival Gemberling (1845-1915) was also in the unit as an infantryman.

My geneology chart, which was made by my father, shows a William as Percival's uncle. This William (not sure if it's the same as William H.) was born in 1837 and died in 1909, and was married to Amanda Forry (1838-1915).

Hope this helps.

Sincerely,

Roy Gemberling

I am presently researching this family because two of their daughters married two Bitner (Bittner) brothers in Snyder County. This is my wife's direct line.

Please let me know if you have any additional information about this couple.
I am interested in this album. It's an album of a part of the family I descend from. That would be the Hanover PA Clapsaddle/Klebsattels, Franz and Rosina, parents of my ancestor Daniel Clapsaddle and of Johannes George Klebsattel, his brother, whose album this seems to be. He married Susanna Slagle, whose father was Christopher Friedrich Von Schlegel and whose brother was Johann Jacob Schlegel. Her son, George Michael Klebsattel, married Christina Gilbert. Is it possible to see photos from this album, or, best of all, for you to send them to me. My email is ohleslie@yahoo.com.

Thanks for the reply, I read thru lots of messages and found the one about Eli Row. I have looked at the census images too.
I am not really researching this line now, just going thru database and cleaning up things.
Possibly Charles Gemberling's death certificate will have his parents names listed. Do you have it?
Glad to share what I have too.

Catherine Row's Parents: Ila at Ila's Gemberling Genealogy made the connection. She found Eli Row and Sarah in the 1870 Amanda, Hancock, OH census. The childrens names matched those listed in Catherine Hills (Row) obituary. I have an electronic version of the obituary but have not seen the census. The only Amanda today is in Fairfield County not Hancock County but it may have been a small village there then. Gemberlings were in Sandusky, Erie and Hancock counties.
Charles Gemberling dates: Were obtained from his obituary which I got electronically from Ila's web site.
Charles Gemberling father: His father being Samuel is a a guess made independently by myself and Ila based on dates and the proximity of residences. Charles is my Great-Grandfather and I have been searching a long time for this connection. I have travelled to PA to attend the Gemberling family reunion and perform research and have not found any more information. Please contact me If you find anything, no matter how small.

Charles Weinberg and Ellen Gemberling

I have a copy of the Portrait and Biographical Album of St. Joseph County, Michigan, Chapman Bros. 1889, Chicago. in it are bios of the early settlers of St. Joseph Co, MI. The pages I copied were of interest to our Gemberling lines that settled in St.Joe. I also copied several others Dock and Weinberg.
I have been off the genealogy trail for awhile this year, so forgive my brain for not firing up on this right away. According to this Leander Weinberg is indeed the father of Charles Weinberg and the dates stated by Jerry are in the ball park. He was born 18 Mar 1821 had 11 children by his first wife and none by second wife Sybil C. (Furman) Beauder. 7 of the 11 were living in 1889 when the bios were published. Joseph, Polly, Catherine "Kate" wife of Edward Tackaberry, Sarah Jane, Mrs Winfield Hopkins (I think this is Sarah), Charles C. married Ellen Gemberling - had one son Ray d. 29 Apr 1888, Pharus R. married Minnie Gemberling, and Elmer Egbert Weinberg living at home.
Leander was county coroner for two terms, town treasurer and highway commissioner.
Oldest son William Harrison Weinberg died in the CW in Atlanta 1864.
Leander's father was George b. Northampton Co, PA and his mother was Susana Sweetzer of the same.

I will scan the pages and add them to my website and the Gemberling site but it may take me awhile to do this so maybe by the 1st
okay

Charles Weinberg's birth is 1860.

How do you know Catherine Row's parents' names?

How do you know the dates for Charles Gemberling and that Samuel was his father?

Samuel Gemberling is found in Union Co, PA in 1830, 1840 & 1850 census. There is Elizabeth age 84 living with Samuel in 1850, possibly his mother.

Thanks for the info

The response indicating Charles Weinberg was born in 1886 and married Ellen Gemberling on 1 Jan 1885 doesn't make sense. Is it two different people or is there a typographical error?

Catherine Row's parents were Eli Row born abt 1820 and Sarah born abt 1817. She was the fourth of eight children.

Charles Gemberling was born 10 Feb 1815 in Snyder County, PA and died 3 Feb 1879 in York Twp, Sandusky, OH. His father Samuel was born abt 1790. I have been searching for a long time for a lead on Samuel so if you find anything please, please let me know.

My great-great-grand father was Henry Gemberling. My research indicates he had a brother, William Gemberling, born in PA in August 1842. Married Catharine Hartly, born in PA in Nov 1846. They were married in Sandusky county, OH in December 1866. If it appears there is any type of relationship, I would be extremely interested in trading information.
Charles WEINBERG (1886-1933) parents are Leander Weinberg (1821-ca 1899) and Catherine Kunselman (1821-1889). Both parents born in PA, died in MI.
Charles Weinberg married Eleanore (Ellen on marriage record) Gemberling 1 Jan 1885 in Three Rivers, MI. Charles was born in MI, died in Canada. Eleanore was born in OH, died in MI.
The earliest evidence of Charles Gemberling (1816-1878) is 1840 Chapman, Union Co, PA census. I do not know who his parents are. Only 3 Gemberlings in 1840 Union Co, PA census - John (40-50), Samel (50-60), Samael Jr (20-30) - maybe is't Samel (50-60).
I do not know who Catherine Row parents are.
