Curious to know the origin of Gemberling, since it is similar to Emberling and Kimberling/Kimberlin. Wondering if the names could have a common origin.

My husband's mother was a Gemberling, her family as far as I know started out in PA and then moved to Ohio, How about the names of Benjamin Married Sarah M Zeller, Samuel Alison Gemberling, Clyde W. Gemberling, Agnes Elizabeth Gemberling Edwin E. Gemberling Elmer Gemberling,John Gemberling, Franklin Benjamin Gemberling Sarah Minerva Gemberling and Fern I Gemberling, any of these names in your family history?
|
The Gemberling's were from the Palatine Provinces of Germany. In a family history that was written up many years ago, by Laura Gemberling (family historian in the early 1900's), gave these various names that have appeared in records: Gamberling, Gamperlin, Gamberlin, Chamberlin, Champerlin, Champerling, Chamberling, Kemberling, Kimberling, Gemberlin, Kamberlin, Gemperlin, Gemberlen, Gemperlen, etc.

Shirley, It is very possible that your husbands family and mine have ties. My line is from George B. Gemberling (son of Jacob Gemberling and Catherine Wolfensberger) and Barbara Kempel. George and Anna Weiss (first wife) had these children: George (moved to Bristol,In), Henry (moved to Ohio), Polly, Catherine, Daniel, Lucy (moved to In), Joseph, Jonathan (married Sarah Bickhart). Son with Barbara was Sephares J. Gemberling who married Rosa Ann Picard. I'm interested in your line. Please email me at your convenience. Thanks! Maggie

Hi Maggie,
I have a little information hopes this helps.
PhilipElizabeth had a son Benjamin born 2-14-1833 in Buffalo Township of Pennsylvania.
Samuel Allison Gemberling another son of Benjamin was born 5-25-1859 in White Deer Township of PA.
Edwin Elmer Gemberling was born to the Benjamin Gemberling family 10-2-1865 in Kelly Township of PA.
John Martin Gemberling another son of Benjamin born 6-4-1867 in PA.
Benjamin Franklin Gemberling another son of Benjamin was born 11-25-1869 in PA.
Sarah Manerva Gemberling a daughter of Benjamin was born 7-9-1874 in PA, Buffalo Township.
Frederick Zeller Gemberling a son of Benjamin was born 9-25-1881 in Silvergrove Snyder Co. PA.
Agnes Elizabeth Gemberling a daughter of Benjamin was born 7-14-1861.
I do know Benjamin had some brother one was Edward and the other Fred, he moved to San Jose, California and had a tire business.
Some of the other names I have heard are Clyde, Roy, Elmer, Lorena Gemberling
When they came to Ohio I'm not sure, but they seem to have moved to Ravenna, Ohio or Kent, Ohio somewhere close to those two cities.
Take care, and let me know if my husband is related in anyway.
Thanks Shirl

Dear Shirley, We are related but it is distant. By Philip and Elizabeth you are talking of the son of Philip and Eva Glass, I believe. Laura Gemberling was the family historian in the early 1900's. She has matched (somewhat) the name of Philip and Elizabeth. Laura wrote that Philip Jr. was born in 1793 and married Susan Elizabeth in 1850 (she was born 1805) in Kelly Twp. Philip Sr. was brother to my gggg grandpa, George B. Gemberling. Some of my George's children moved to Ohio and some to In. I believe the rest stayed in Pa. I don't recognize your names but I intend to search thru' them and see what I can find. I have found several of Philip's family in Elkhart, In. Some were buried there. There were so many with the same names that it's hard to tell right off! Thanks for writing me. I'll try and get back with you as soon as I can. Maggie

I went to Pa last summer to visit a 6th cousin on the Philip Gemberling line. We had so much in common. She's also doing the genealogy! We went to the Gemberling Farm where the original cabin of Jacob Gemberling and Catherine Wolfensberger once stood. It's in Selinsgrove. I was in awe! I saw the farm house that Sephares and Rosa Ann lived in and raised their children in. I touched the barn they built and kept their stock in. It was like coming home for me. It's hard to explain! Then we went up the road to the Salem (Rowe's) Church that my George B. helped to found. The cemetery is behind the church and and found George up on the hill with his two wives and several other Gemberling's. I have family history (rough as it is) that I got from another cousin. If you'd like I can make copies and mail it to you over the computer or thru' snail mail. I started my search last year and have really gotten a lot of help from other family members that I didn't know were there! So I try to help when I can by passing on what I have. I have 2 bits of history. One was written by Laura Gemberling - a cousin to my grandma. The other by Stephen Staruch - I'm not sure how he's related but he had some interesting notes on my line of the family! Laura's work hasn't been documented. And Stephen's is a lot of info from court papers in Elkhart, In and in Snyder Co, Pa. Let me know if you want copies! We'll figure this out how your husband and I are related! Happy hunting! Maggie
