I've been spinning my wheels trying to determine what is fact and what is fiction. My father was born in 1903 in Jackson, PA. I feel I have a fairrly accurate tree going back to a John Gelatt coming from France in the early 1700's. Hoping to get factual info on Gelatts in WY where there is a Gelatt Lake and Little Gelatt Lake, in ID where a Gelatt was in the party that discovered Gold, on NV where there was a Gelatt & Moore Stage Line and in CA where there was a Gelatt Post Office in the Donner Pass area. This Gelatt Surname Board may help my research. James E. Gelatt Yakima, WA

Hello, I just typed in "Gelatt" in Google to see what I would come up with and found this board. I would like to send you what was written by Francis Marcellus Gelatt (my great grandfather) of Thompson, PA, in 1896:
"The fifth Gelatt Reunion held at Keystone Hall at Thompson Aug 28, 1896 being the 85th birth anniversary of Robert Gelatt, Jr.
As I was appointed to give a sketch history of the Gelatt family, will give what little information I could obtain, for there is no history of the Gelatt family. If these reunions of the family had dated back a hundred years or so we would have had quite a history of the Gelatts.
There should be a history written of the family for future generations.
The Gelatt Family of this continent are descendants of John Gelatt who came to this Country from Paris France at the time of the French and Indian War, about 1755 at the age of 18 years, (My Father, R. Gelatt says when he was a small boy he remembers him coming to their home on horseback).
His Father was a wealthy silk manufacturer in Paris and this son John was induced to come to this country by the French by offering him governorship of some territory here; but instead of this they gave him a gun and put him in the ranks - we here know but little of his life. He settled in Taunton, Mass. Married and had three sons, John Jr., George and Abraham moved to Savoy where he died at about 100 years of age.
John Jr. settled in Bedford, Mass but little is known to us of his family.
Since writing the above we have received a sketch of the family sent me from California by his son Caft (?) - Chas. W. Gelatt. Widow Mrs. Jane R. Gelatt which I have learned also since writing the above in regard to the Frenchman John Gelatt, that John Jr. and George were sons of his first wife, and Abraham and a daughter Lydia were children from a second wife. (Newspaper article taped to this writing says "Nordhoff streets seem quiet and lonesome without our jolly neighbor Capt. Gillette and his frisky steed. The captain is the youngest and most vigorous man of his age in the State and his temporary disablement is a public calamity. Nov. 30, 1887).
His second son George from whom we in B. are descendants was born in Taunton, Mass., when his parents went to church they took guns with them to protect themselves from Indians. When a young man he inlisted (sic) in the Revolutionary War was in the Navy through the 7 years war and after the war, he traded $300.00 in Government money for a cow.
Married Hannah Colins of Bedford Mass. (The Colins family now own steam ship lines).
They had three children born in Bedford and the family moved to Savoy Mass. where they had three more children.
Names of children:
Robert, Colins, Abigail, George, Richard and Jonathan and moved to Gibson, Pa. (now called Gelatt) date not know where he died Dec. 3rd 1852 at the advanced age of 100 years 1 month and 11 days.
His wife Hannah died at Gibson, Pa., Aug. 24th 1848, 91 years of age. I remember the old Grandpa and Grandma when they lived with Grandpa, his son in Thomson (sic) (F.M. Gelatt) According to the war records of the Revolution the above George Gelatt was 102 years of age at death.
(I will continue writing this in another message - Linda Couser)

(I will continue the Reunion notes of FM Gelatt, 1896)
January 1898 - I learned by Jonathan Gelatt family record that he (Jonathan) was born in Balston Sp. Feb. 24th 1793. Consequently, his father's (George) family must have moved there from Mass. before coming to Pa. - (this name Jonathan had repeatedly been spelled "Janithan") Janithan G. was born Feb 24th 1793 and died Nov. 9th 1877.
Abraham Gelatt third son moved to the Town of Bigtree in NY state, we know nothing more of his family.
Robert Gelatt Senior, (oldest son of Geo. the revolutioner) was born in Taunton, Mass. - at the age of ten years they moved to Savoy, Mass. and at the age of 22 was married to Miss Wealthy Caswell of same place.
Had two children Anna, who died there at the age of 2 years and Matilda who is still living. Then he moved to Grafton, N.H. where they had 4 children more Nancy, Robert, Stephen and Lucretia and Olin.
The family moved to Gibson, Pa. in the year 1822
Robert Gelatt Jr. whose 85th birth anniversary we celebrate today August 28, 1896 was eleven years of age the day after they started from Grafton, N.H. on the overland trip, being 74 years ago yesterday.
The Robert Gelatt Sen. died in Thompson on June 23rd 1879 at the age of 95 years 7 mos.
His wife Wealthy died in Thompson, Pa., in the year of 1858 Sept 28th age 73 years.
Abigail (only daughter) who was born in Bedford, Mass, and married a Blanchard in Savoy, they had 10 children, her husband died there. When she moved to Gibson, Pa., with her family.
Names: Maranda, Betsy, Saviah, Olive, Anna, Ehin, Mary, George, Joseph, Harriet.
Colins Gelatt Sen. married Betsy Macintire of Savoy and moved to Gibson, Pa., where he died - they had 8 children, Nancy, Hulda, Asenith, Hannah, Amy, Mary, David, Leoansa, David who lived here, some years, and died in this place.
George Gelatt 3rd son who married Rabecca Wahalin, in Savoy and moved to Gibson (now called Gelatt) Pa., year. Had 5 children by his first wife Clarasa. John, Samantha, Washington, Rabecca. His first wife died 1821 age 30 years. He married Susan Williams of Harford, Pa. - for his second wife, had 3 children Richard, Gurdin, Silas. Geo. Gelatt died at Gelatt, Pa. Nov 25, 1865 aged 75 years. His second wife died in 1871 age 80.
Find that the above Geo. Gelatt had 6 children by his first and 6 by his second wife. By First wife second wifes children born before Richard mere Marull, Esther, Almeda - died young. (sic).
Richard Gelatt, the 4th son of Geo. moved from Mass. married a Eliza Morey Cinimahane N.G. And from there to Iowa, near Council Bluffs. Had, think 8 children (note inserted here by someone: had 11 children some died).
Harrison, Emily, Hannah. Hellen, Hubert, Wallace, Richard, Jr. They are in Cal. and other western states.
Richard Sen died in Iowa. His wife also. Dates of above not known at this above writing.
Richard Gelatt's daughter Hellen married Geo. W. McCraig who afterwards was congressman from Iowa, and was appointed Secretary of War by Pres. Hayes.
Janithan 5th son of Geo. Sen. born Feb. 24, 1793, came to Gibson from Mass. Married Rabecca Parmater at Balston Spa. (N>G. May 17, 1818). (I believe this is a note - L. Couser 7/5/92).
They had 4 children: Wealthy, Harriet, Collins, and Denzil. He died in Thompson Nov. 9, 1877. His wife born in Westminster March 6, 1791. She died Feb. 23, 1856.
Some additions and changes made in the above Jan. 1898.
If any errors would like to be corrected for intend this for future use." (sic).

Ellen, Thank you for posting the info. I have a picture of the gathering in 1896 - really fascinating. Linda

Ellen, One more thing which I don't know whether or not it would be of interest, I have 2 old velvet albums of pictures of the Gelatt family in Gelatt (Gibson) Pa taken in the 1800's but unfortunately, I don't know who most of the people are, possibly someone else would know. Linda
|
These are of course of great interest. We have other photos which we can compare them to and attempt to identify who's who.
Thanks, Ellen
|
I will attempt to scan them at some point and will email them to you if you would like. We are on sabbatical and will not be available after July 11 for a period of time but as soon as I can produce them, I'll send them. Linda
