I am trying to information about great grandfather and great grandmother. I believe his name was Louis Geibel and was married to Gottlieben Geibel. They had 4 children: Carl, my grandfather, born in 1900, Margaret, Louis, and William. He may have owned a Bakery on Laurel Street in Philadelphia around 1900.

I have located census records from 1880 where Louis Geibel born in Baden? Germany was married to Sarah Geibel and had 2 stepsons. His occupation indicates Baker. They lived at 151 Laurel Street, Philadelphia.

A reply to a message I posted a while back, told me there was a Louis Geibel who owned a Bakery at 149 Laurel Street in Philadelphia.

Census records from 1910 show Gottlieb Geibel and 1 son William and 1 daughter Margrette (sp). Gottlieben's occupation is listed as Baker. I am unable to read the street name.

Any information is greatly appreciated.

Carl

I just read your message after doing a little searching and was truly amazed to find it. My father was your grandfather's yougest brother, William. Louis was indeed a baker who lived on Laurel Street. When I was a child, my father showed me the house where he was born. I also have a few of Louis' baking pans.

He appears to be quite a mysterious figure; my father knew little about him; he was a baby when Louis died. My Aunt Margaret, the oldest of the four children, apparently didn't know much. He was married once before.

I do have some original documents that I discovered after Aunt Margaret's death; I think the information will be helpful to you. Ludwig Geibel emigrated to the United States from Hahn, Hessen, Darmstadt in 1868. I believe that he was born in 1839. He became a US citizen in Philadelphia on June 25, 1892. He and Gottlieben Sanwald were married on May 9, 1895 at Saint Paul's Lutheran Church in Philadelphia . She was from Sulzbach and Murr, Wurttemberg. One of the witnesses to the marriage was Jacob Geibel -- I'm assuming, his brother.

Good luck in your search. I would appreciate learning any information that you might discover. My cousin Marie, duaghter of Louis, is also interested.

Barbara

Hello Barbara,

This is the first response I ever received regarding Louis Geibel from a Geibel. Thank you for responding. Louis does appear to be quite a mysterious figure. My father, Carl F. Jr does not know much about him and my Aunt Helen, my father's sister is very tight lipped. However, my father has mentioned your name, Barbara and your/his cousin's name Marie. I know nothing else about the Geibels beyond my father, his sister, and their grandparents name and what I have found in the Census records.

I have found your father's name and Marie's father's name referenced in a few Census records. Marie's father Louis and my grandfather, Carl attended Girard College in Philadelphia as children. I believe Girard College was for both orphaned and fatherless boys.

I have discovered as you mentioned that Louis, or Ludwig was married to Sarah Leffler who had 2 sons from a previous marriage (I assume) according to the 1880 Census.

I would really appreciate learning more information from you. Our family heritage can not possibly be that much of a secret. Besides, I know nothing about my Grandfather's siblings and thier descendants.

You can email me directly at cgeibel@tampabay.rr.com. Perhaps we could touch base.

Thanks Barbara. I really appreciate your information.

I don't have any information on Gottlieb Geibel in my data base. My Geibel family comes from Limburg and/or Neuenheim, Germany, from the mid 1800's. I don't have any known connections to Darmstadt that I know of at this time. Have traced my Geibel line in Limburg and Neuenheim back to the mid-1600's with no link to Darmstadt at least through that period of time. Sincerely, Bruce B. Geibel.
