I am interested to know if anyone might be related to or know facts about my great grandfather and any ancestors before him. His name was Jacob Gehl. He was born on July 9, 1840 in Luxembourg. He died on November 11, 1898. I believe he was married to Margaret Wieirman from Pennsylvania. His son was my grandfather, William John Gehl, born on July 6, 1890 in St. Lawrence, Wisconsin. My grandfather died shortly after I was born. I never had a chance to find out more about his family from him first hand. If you can help please e-mail me at jcg74@webtv.net Thank you, James C. Gehl

James, I am curious, my ancestor was Jacob Yahl, and I know from first hand knowledge that various spellings were Gehl/Jehl. They were originally from the Alsace-Loraine area. He had three sons that emigrated to the United States, and one that stayed in that area. First, his son Philip came, then his son Nicholas came over (this is my direct line), then Michael (listed in the Louisiana census). Does any of this sound familiar to you? Michelle

Michelle-- Thank you for your message and I apoligize for the delay in getting back to you. Life has been pretty crazy for me lately. My great grandfather, Jacob Gehl, was born in Luxemborg on July 9, 1840 and died Nov. 11, 1898. Some of the other names you mentioned was also common in our family. However, I don't see any quick connection. Let me know if you have any other comments. Jim Gehl

Jim, I have come across some new info since I wrote that last message. Nicholas was born around 1823, his brother Phiilp (also Philip) was born around 1833. There were two other brother in the middle. One was Michael and the other one escapes me right now...maybe George. Nicholas and his wife Theresia were born in Alsace, France; as were his first five children. Philip was also born in Alsace, his wife Margeurite was born in Baden. I'm not sure where Philip and Margeurite were married. I haven't gotten that far. My line is Nicholas. A lot of our line still lives in Ohio. There is family folklore that a Jacob was there father, and I know there was a name change (because the "G" in German sounds like the "Y" in American). However, I can find no records of them in the imigration info. Let me know what you think.... Michelle

Michelle-- I don't know of any connection with family in France. However, at the same time, I simply don't have much information or knowledge beyond my great grandfather, Jacob Gehl. Good luck as you continue your search! Peace, Jim Gehl

I have a Jacob Gehl in my tree too. I have him born about 1841, coming from Keispelt, Capellen, Luxembourg, Luxembourg before 1850 and settling first in Hartford and later in Addison. He marries a Margaret from Prussia and they have a Nicholas, Peter, Michael and Lewis according to the 1880 census which is hard to read.

I also have that info in my files! Jacob | Margaret Nicholas, Peter, Frank and others. Contact me direct..... marcia7439@yahoo.com (Just put GEHL in the subject line )
