I just recently discovered this web page. I know Gehl is not very common. My great grandfather was the youngest of several sons from Germany. The older sons emigrated to the US from England and Andrew or Andres went back to Germany and emigrated some years later to Altoona, Pennsylvania to work for the Pennsylvania railroad. I think the older brothers settled around the Wisconsin area. I will be going to Pennsylvania for Thanksgiving and will try to obtain more background.

Helene,
I am curious to find out if any of my information fits with yours. My ancestor was Jacob Yahl (also seen as Gehl and Jehl). He had at least three sons that emigrated to the United States from Alsace-Loraine. Philip came over first, then Nicholas (my direct descendant) and Michael (listed in the Louisiana census). Does any of this tie in with your info?

Michelle, I have never seen the spellings that you showed me, but I do know that some of my ancestors were from Alsace-Lorraine and that my great grandfather had three older brothers that came to this country years before he did. All my family is in Pennsylvania, so I will need to do some checking on your info. Thanks.

Helene,
Let me know if you find anything out. I forwarded this to another family researcher, too. She might know more about it than me.

I have Gehl ancestry that dates back to Altoona. I bet we have a connection somewhere. Get back to me at your earliest convenience.

Do you have any information about the George Gehl you posted? Probably a shot in the dark. Supposedly the Gehl line I have came from SaarBruecken.

I will have to look but I don't think so. There is a George Yahl currently living in St.Louis, MO. A distant relative. Give me time and I'll check.

David,
No, that is my grandfather. His line didn't come from there, they came from an area by Alsace.
