Yes, this is the family. I received from another family member that George Gehl married Mary Owen. I don't think Owen is a German name, so I wonder about that. I know that George's son came to Altoona in the late 19th century. His wife was Maria Schmelzer.

Sorry about the major delay, I had forgotten I posted here. George's wife was Mary Schmelzer. She was born 18 Mar 1851. Her parents according to another site were Peter Schmelzer and Katharina Schmitt. Mary was born in in the Saar Bruecken area and had two younger sisters, Elisabeth and Katharina. That's all I know as of now.

Hi Helene,

Do you happen to know the names of your Great-Grandfather, Andrew's brothers and sisters? Or who his parents were?

I found a cemetery posting for Mary Gehl, as follows:

Birth: Feb. 18, 1827
Bavaria, Germany
Death: Jan. 9, 1895
Altoona
Blair County
Pennsylvania, USA

Henry Gehl, spouse. Res. 2706 Maple ave. Mem. St. Mary's Catholic Church. Surv. by spouse; children: George, Henry, Andrew, John, Furer, Detembel, all Altoona & Katie of Postein, Bavaria. Int. Fri., 1/11. Stevens Mortuary, Altoona, Pa.

I would like to find out more on the above family.

Hi Tom (Irishsaxon),

I would love to exchange info on the Gehl line with you. I don't have much, but am familiar with your Great-Grandmother, Mary Gehl who married a Greiner. I'm especially interested in her Father's parents and siblings.

I am looking for ancestral information about an Ellen Gehl (1854-1902) who married Lewis Henry Peter in 1877 and lived in Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania.

Hi (mtharris39),

There's no relation to me that I know of. But wondered.. were you able to find them in the 1880 census? I couldn't. I did find Lewis Henry remarried to an Emma J. in the 1920 census though. Looks like she had previously been married to a Louis D. Wehr.
