Hello Carl;

Have you any idea where in Quebec your John Gehan was born? Was he married in Quebec? Was he a Roman Catholic?

My family, Gahan, were from New Ross, County Wexford, Ireland and emmigrated to Quebec about 1845. There are a number of searchers for John Gahans in Quebec and the Northeastern U.S.A. Perhaps Gehan is just another spelling of Gahan?

John B. Gehan (1837-1919) gave his birthplace in different documents as Constable, NY, Malone, NY and Quebec (no town). He was the son of John Gehan (born about 1795) and Katherine (born about 1798). According to the 1860 census, John (the father) was born in Cork, Ireland and Katherine was born in Castow, Ireland (maybe Carlow ??)

I saw your posting about John B. Gehan from NY, and Quebec and wondered if by chance John had a sister named Bridget. I am researching Bridget Gehan who was born in Ireland and brought to New York (with her parents) as a child and later to Milwaukee. She married Daniel O'Leary and moved to Wisconsin. Does any of that fit with the Gehan family that you know about? Any leads you can give me would be great.
Thanks. Pat

I don't know of any Bridget Gehan in my Gehan ancestors but I have run across these in my searchings:
1860 Columbia County, New York Census
Ghent, page 744

James Gehan, age 38, farm laborer, born Ireland
wife Hannah, age 36, born Ireland
son Michael, age 8, born NY
son James, age 7, born NY
daughter Bridget, age 6, born NY
son Thomas, age 4, born NY
son Joseph, age 1, born NY
son Christopher, age 4/12, born NY

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1870 Columbia County, New York Census
Ghent, page 270, line 11

GAHEN, James, age 55, works on railroad, born Ireland
wife Hannah, age 45, born Ireland
son Michael, age 19, born NY, works on railroad
son James, age 18, born NY, laborer
son Thomas, age 14, born NY
son Joseph, age 12, born NY
son Christopher, age 10, born NY
daughter Anna, age 8, born NY
daughter Mary, age 6, born NY
son John, age 3, born NY

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1880 Litchfield County, Connecticut Census
Enumeration District 5, Sheet 20, line 49

Gahen, James, age 63, born Ireland
wife Hannah, age 57, born Ireland
daughter Anna, age 18, born New York
daughter Mary, age 16, born New York
son John, age 11, born New York
daughter Bridget, age 9, born New York
son Thomas, age 23, born New York

These seem to be the same family, ages are off some from census to census but children's names seem to match up.

Also, the Ontario, Canada 1871 Census has Bridget Gehan, born 1868 in Ontario. Parents were Patrick and Bridget Gehan, both born in Ireland.

John Benjamin Gehan and Julia Ann Wadsworth had four children:

1) Norman Wadsworth Gehan (July 19, 1876-September 28, 1941)
2) Frederick Walstein Gehan (March 16, 1878-October 9, 1943)
3) Lydia A. Gehan (July 17, 1879 - July 14, 1898)

As far as I know John B. Gehan was never in Tennessee. He was born in either New York or Canada, died in East Hartford, Connecticut.

J. Benjamin Gehan of Hockanum Dead
Death Comes to Contractor, 81 Years Old
East Harford, Sunday, March 9
John Benjamin Gehan, 81, of No. 63 High street, Hockanum, died yesterday afternoon at 2 o’clock at his home. He was 81 years old. He had been in good health until a short time ago when hardening of the arteries developed, and yesterday he received a shock from which he did not recover.
Mr. Gehan was a well-known contractor and builder and for the past forty-five years he had erected many buildings. He was born in New York state. He was a son of the late John and Katherine Gehan. When 16 years old he left his home and went to Holyoke, Mass., where he became a millwright and held a responsible position. He had a natural ability for building dams and his work in the factory was in heavy construction. After spending ten years there he moved to New Haven, where he had charge of the repair work on a large estate. Mr. Gehan remained there for two years, when he moved to Meriden. At one time he was engaged in erecting several large churches, one of which was in Hudson, N. Y. In 1874 he came to this town, where he had lived ever since. He married Julia A. Wadsworth and to them were born four children. They are Norman W. and Fred W. Gehan, and Mrs. Benjamin Merrill. A daughter, Lydia Gehan, died when she was 19 years old. Mrs. Gehan died three years ago. There are nine grandchildren.
The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o’clock from his home, No. 63 High street. Rev. H. W. Tillinghast, pastor of the South Congregational Church will conduct the service.
