I am interested to know if other people are researching the Gegens. I believe our name was originally Jagen or Jaegen. My great-grandfather, Nicholas Gegen, was married to Catherine Land in Metterich, Rheinland, Prussia, and had children named Frederick, Margaret, Eva, and Catherine. His second wife was Sybilla Nelles, and they had Andrew, Mathias, John, and Joseph. They lived in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Kansas and Iowa.

Frederick Gegen was my great-great-grandfather and was born in Weilsacker Germany in 1824. Could this be the same Frederick in your post? He married Magdalen Hesse. They lived in New Trier, Minnesota and then moved to St. Mark's, Kansas. They had 11 children and one named Ferdinand was my great-grandfather. He lived in Colwich, Kansas. I have much more information about their family if you are interested.

I am very interested in learning more about the Kansas Gegens. I am sure that we have the same ancestors as I have a copy of the St. Mary's Catholic Church records from New Trier, MN. Frederick Gegen and Helena Huss were married on 8 Feb, 1866. Frederick's parents are Nicolas and Catharina Land from Wilsecker and Helena's parents are Nicolas Huss and Margarethae Lee from Medernach, Luxemburg. My great-grandfather, John Peter Gegen, was a half-brother to Frederick. Catherina died and Nicolas married Sybilla Nels and had 4 more sons when he was in his fifties. Frederick also left 3 married sisters behind when he moved from New Trier.

Well you have more information dating further back than me. I dont even know where I got this information from, my aunt handed it out one holiday, I need to ask her where it came from. My grandparents are not living, so she may not know. However, I have that Frederick Gegen married Magdalin Hesse (kind of like Huss). Do you think this is the same person? I do have that she is from Madernack. Did they change their names back then to fit in or for religious reasons? To not sound so German??
You may already have this but here it goes: Frederick and Whoever Gegen had 11 children: Nick, Jake, William, Margaret (Geris), Rose (Mainz), Ferdinand (my great), Valentine, Mary (died young), Michael (died young), 2 deceased infants. In 1875 they moved to St. Marks, Kansas and are buried there. Frederick died 11-26-1909 and his wife 9-23-1926. This is the same town I grew up and went to school and I have been in that cemetery a hundred times (near baseball fields) and never realized my greats were in there. I will get out there and see what her headstone says to see if she changed her name. This little town is unincorporated just a school and church, it is about 10 miles from Wichita, KS.
The rest of the info I have is about Ferdinand Gegen. He went by Curly, was born March 30, 1875 in New Trier, MN. He married Anna Geiger on Nov 20, 1900 and moved to Colwich, KS. About 5 miles away, this was the town to head to because it had a train station. They had 8 children. Frances, Ben, Cecelia (Wohler), Raymond, Edward, Aloysuis (my grandfather), William, and Sylvester.
Aloysuis was born 12-13-13 and married Opal Dwyer. Their parents werent happy, he was German and she was Irish, not the thing to do back then I guess.
I have more about Ferdinand's other children if you want it. This is really neat. Thanks Pam Bauchmoyer

Thought you might find this newspaper clipping interesting as it does connect the Kansas and Minnesota Gegens. Hastings Gazette 18 Dec 1909 "Mr. Federick Gegen, a pioneer resident of Dakota County, died at his home in Colwich, Kan., on the 4th inst, at the advanced age of eighty-one years. He was born in Trier, Germany, In 1828, coming to America in 1859, traveling quite extensively for five or six years, and locating in Hampton. Was married to Miss Helena Huss at New Trier in 1868, taught at the Kranz schoolhouse in 1878 and was also clerk at Michael McHugh's hardware store in this city, removing to Kansas in 1883. He leaves a wife, two sons and five daughters; also three brothers and two sisters, Andrew, of Colwich, John P.,Joseph, and Mrs. P.F. Kranz, of Hastings, and Mrs. Jacob Horn, of Hampton. The funeral was held at Colwith on the 7th inst." The John P. mentioned in the article was my grandfather and actually a step-brother to Frederick, as was Andrew and Joseph. His other step-brother was Mathias, who died at about 21 years of age. The women mentioned would be his sisters, Catherine Gegen Kranz, and Eva Gegen Horn. His other sister was Margaret Gegen Boor who died in 1890. They all had the same father, Nicholas Gegen, who is buried in Hastings. I have a Gegen Family Tree on Ancestry.com that I am adding information to and I would be interested in more of your family.

Hi Rhae, Yes, we do have a connection to your Elizabeth Stoudt. She married my great uncle in Kansas in 1877. His name was Andrew Gegen. They lived in Kansas, Hastings, Mn, Iowa, and then finally back to Colwich, Kansas. They had 3 sons and a daughter who died in childhood. If you have a membership to Ancestry.com, I have entered a lot of this information there. However, I never knew much about Elizabeth. If you don't have a membership I could send you some more information. Kathy(Gegen) Connelly
