I've just started researching the Gefferts from Whiting, and hope that I can share info with those who've gone before!

My partner is the grandson of John Geffert (9 Aug 1894 - Apr 1964) and Veronica Durick (1 Dec 1896 - Oct 1972). Census records from 1920 and 1930 say that John immigrated either 1911 or 1912. I also have his WWI draft registration from Ancestry.com. From www.ellisisland.org, there is a Janos Geffert on a 24 Sep 1912 passenger manifest of the Kronprinzessin Cecilie. Janos, age 18, lists his mother Maria Geffert of Zboro as his nearest relative. He is going to meet his father John Geffert in Ellsworth, PA.

The 1910 census in Ellsworth shows a John Geffert boarding with Andy and Zofda? Geffert.

I'm wondering if this Janos is our John Geffert, and how he is related to the rest of the Gefferts. Do you have any information to share?

Best regards, and happy holidays!

Dear Karen,
John Geffert and Veronica Durick are my great grandparents. I have some information on John's relatives. His father's name was Josef Andrej Geffert (1865-1924). His mother was Anna Maria?(this might be the name you are looking at) Gutter (possibly Guter) who was born in 1867 and passed away in 1949. Both were from Zborov, Czecho-Slovakia. Together they had 7 boys, and 1 girl. 5 boys lived, the other children died very young or at birth. There names were Anna (Maria), Andrej, and Pavol.
John's surving brothers were Joseph(1890-1964), Andrew John (1900-!969), Paul (2-26-1906 - 6-29-87), and Karol (6-9-1909 - 7-15-91).
You may already know all of this, but I hope it was helpful to you. I have 4 or 5 pages of family history starting with Josef and Anna Geffert. i would love to share more infromation together. Please post a reply and maybe we could compare notes.
Good Luck,

Dear Veronica,

Thank you very much for this information - I didn't have any of it. My boyfriend is the son of John and Veronica's daughter Dorothy - which of her brothers is your grandfather? She still lives on Lake Avenue with her brother, and is going to send Mark some family information.

Of course I'd love to hear more from you. I hope I'll have things to add, but we're just getting started.

Take care,

Karen

Dear Karen,
Dorothy's brother Don is my grandpa. He is married to Dolores Cross. My grandma told me a funny story, you know how they have a sister named Dolores?...well their mother got her name from my grandma. Apparently they all grew up close to each other, and Veronica liked her name so much...now there are two Dolores Gefferts.
Anyway, I think I remember meeting Dorothy. If its the same person I'm thinking of, she gave me a silver and turquiose cross for my first communion.
At any rate, if you ever get stumped on names or dates, I'll gladly help you out. If you would like, I can send you a copy of what I have. My grandma started with Josef and Anna Geffert and has gone through all of the way up to now. But there are some missing dates and things like that. Hopefully we can help each other out.
Thanks alot,
Victoria

Dear Victoria,

Sorry for calling you Veronica last time - guess I got my V-gals mixed up!

So Don and Dorothy have a sister Dolores? Mark probably told me that, but I must not have noted it. It would be nice to have the dates you have - we're just getting started.

Thanks for all your help!
