Hi,
I am researching my Geffert ancestors in Zborov, Slovakia.
My ancestor, Anna Geffert (born 1871) married Joannes Hmurovich. They emigrated to Whting, Indiana.
Anna's parents were Emercius (Imrich) Geffert and Maria Rubaczky.
I am willing to share my information.
Thanks

Hi guys! I have a connection to the Gefferts from Zborov who ended up in Detroit. My grandmother's brother, John Thomas Holevar (parents were Martin Choleva "Holevar" and Susan Balon from Zborov) married Mary Geffert. I just learned that Mary Geffert's family came from Zborov and that Gefferts still live there. In fact, a Geffert in Zborov recently gave a photo of some Gefferts & Holevars in Detroit (probably from the 1930s or '40s) to a Choleva cousin in Zborov who just e-mailed it to me (did that make sense?)! Anyway, my wife and I went to Zborov in September and had a wonderful experience tracking down our cousins and seeing Slovakia. I don't know much about the Gefferts yet but, if you want, I can see if the Gefferts in Zborov know English & have e-mail. And I can tell you a little about the town if you're interested. I'm also interested in some cousins from Zborov who reportedly went to Whiting, IN. In the Zborov church records, their surname name looks like Hruskoery. Can't find them in the States, though, so any info. on them would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Jerry:

There are (or were) Gefferts galore in eastern Pennsylvania. There are quite a few listed in the SSDI. My maternal grandfather (George Runik) is buried in Hazelton, and it appears that at his time of death, he had many cousins living there.

His grandmother was Maria Geffert, from Zborov.

Hi,

I'm from Detroit, my father Dominic Stanek arrived at Ellis Island in 1929, his father's name was also Dominik, they were both born in Zborov. My mother visited relatives in Whiting, Indiana in the 1950's. My father was in the wedding party for Joe Geffert. Joseph Geffert Sr. and John Holevar and his wife Mary (Mary was married twice) are buried right next to my father in a cemetery in Mount Clemens, Michigan. A Mary Geffert, from Detroit, who was 100 years old, just died this year or last year. When I visited Slovakia in 1992, I visited with a Mary Geffert from Zborov, she really resembled my grandfather, Dominik Stanek, who went from Ellis Island to Pittsburgh, Pa, and then on to Detroit. The Gefferts were a name I heard very often growing up in suburban Detroit.

Hi Veronica. Thank you for writing. Do you have a connection to the Gefferts then, or were they just friends of the family? It's amazing how many Zborov & other Slovak families went to Pa. first, then came to Detroit or Whiting. I tracked down the Hruskoczy family in Whiting & they have a grandfather who looks exactly like my great granddad Martin Holevar (Choleva), though I don't know of a direct connection between those families. I've seen resemblance among other Zborov families, as well. It's all very interesting. I've also seen the Stanek name throughout the old Zborov church records, but I don't know of a connection (haven't figured out who Joseph Geffert's parents were). I'll have to ask my grandma (also a Veronica) if she remembers the Staneks in Detroit. I'll let you know if she does. And I'll have to visit the graves in Mount Clemens, where my mom lives. Take care.

Hi again, I've printed our messages and I'll have my mother (Madeline (Demchak) Stanek) read the info and she'll figure it all out. She's a living history book of stories from Slovakia and the old days growing up in Detroit.

Great! I'd love to hear what she has to say. If you haven't already done so, record or write down all of your mother's stories before it's too late! Sadly, nearly all the stories from the old country -- even relatives here in this country -- have been lost to us over the years. So I'm trying to gather as much info. as possible. If you want, so we don't clog up the Ancestry boards, you can write to my home e-mail: jerryseim@juno.com. Hope to hear from you soon, Veronica! Thanks!

I'm looking for Marie Balon who married Joseph Demkovich and lived in or around Whiting, Indiana then moved to St. Joseph, Michigan. There might be a thin connection to your cousins who moved to Whiting.

Interesting! I wouldn't be surprised if there is a connection, but I'm not familiar with that couple. Do you have more info. on them (dates, places of birth, & their parents, for example)? If so, write to me at home, jerryseim@juno.com, and we'll see if we can track them down. My great grandma's sister was also Maria Balon, but she lived in the northern Lower Peninsula.

Hi,
I am doing research on my family who lived in Zborov in the mid 1800s until the 1940s. Was wondering if anyone had any photos of the town back then or had heard of a bad flood in the late 1920s?

Thanks,
Denyse Tannen
